    Learn about the new features and settings in the latest version of Google Keep.

    Improved list features & settings

    Items you check off can now be grouped together at the bottom, and you can customize some or all lists under Menu > List settings. You can also touch Make a copy if you have a go-to shopping list you want to use again.

    Manage deleted notes in Trash view

    If you deleted a note by accident or want to permanently delete notes, touch the Trash view (in the  Navigation drawer) to easily manage those items. Notes in Trash are automatically deleted after seven days.

    Search for text in photos
    Available in English only.

    Find a receipt or a recipe easily by searching for text in recently uploaded images. Just touch the Search icon and type your query.

  1. About Google Keep

    You can use Google Keep to create notes quickly and easily. Since it syncs your notes to Google, you can access them virtually anywhere: on your Android device, through a Chrome app, and on the web.

    Create: Take notes using text, photos, or your voice, and add multi-purpose checklists.

    Organize: Drag & drop your notes and lists to rearrange them, and archive them when you no longer need them.

    Access: Browse and search notes easily - you can even use widgets on your Android device for quick note-taking and viewing.

    To start using Google Keep on your Android device, follow these steps:

    1. Open the Google Keep app. If it’s not already on your device, you can download it on Google Play.
    2. Sign in with your Google Account. You can switch accounts or add a new one in your device’s Settings menu.

    Once you're signed in with your Google Account, you can start using Google Keep on the web right away.

    Once you're signed in to Chrome, you can start using the Google Keep Chrome app right away.

  2. Notes & lists in Google Keep

    You can create notes and lists on the go with the Google Keep Android app, or take a note on your browser using Keep on the web.

    When you open Google Keep, all active notes that you've created are displayed. To rearrange them, touch & hold a note and drag it to a new location.

    You can view your notes in single or multi-column view. Google Keep displays multi-column view by default, and it modifies the text in your notes to fit that view. To switch to single-column view, touch  Menu > Single-column view

    To switch to another Google Account, touch the Navigation drawer icon in the top left corner, then touch the account that's displayed. You can add additional accounts from your device's Settings menu.

    Create a new note or list

    Add a quick note
    1. Touch Add quick note to start typing.
    2. Touch Done on your keyboard.

    To expand the note, touch the Expand icon . To change the note color, touch the Color icon

    Notes

    To create a note, follow these steps:

    1. Touch the Note icon at the top of the screen.
    2. Start entering text in the Note field. To add a title, touch the Title field.
    3. When you finish, touch the Keep icon  in the top left corner to save.

    You can add checkboxes to your note to make it a list. Touch Menu > Show checkboxes to display them in the note.

    Lists

    To create a list, follow these steps:

    1. Touch the List icon  at the top of the screen.
    2. Enter text to create a list item. To add more items, touch Next on the keyboard to move to the next item. Touch the Title field if you want to enter a title.
    3. To remove an item, touch it, then touch the Remove icon  to the right of it.
    4. When you finish, touch the Keep icon  in the top left corner to save.

    To check items on your list, touch the box next to the item. If you want to uncheck all items, touch Menu > Uncheck all items.

    Tip: To reorder list items, touch the grab handle on the left side of an item, then drag it to its new location.

    To hide the checkboxes, touch Menu > Hide checkboxes.

    Make a copy of a list

    If you have a list you use frequently, like a shopping or packing list, you can make a copy of it to use again.

    1. Open the list you want to copy.
    2. Touch Menu > Make a copy.
    3. Touch Uncheck all items if you want to uncheck list items.

    List settings

    To change settings for the list you’re editing or for all future lists, open a list and touch Menu > List settings.

    You can change the following settings:

    • Choose to add new list items to the top or bottom of a list.
    • Keep checked items in place or move them to the bottom of a list.
    • Apply these settings to future lists.
    Audio notes
    1. Touch the Microphone icon microphone icon at the top of the screen.
    2. Start speaking, then touch the Microphone or stop speaking when you finish. Keep adds an audio recording and the spoken text to the note.
    3. Touch the Title field if you want to add a title, and touch the text above the audio snippet to edit it.

    To remove the audio recording, touch the Remove icon  to the right of it.

    On devices running Android 4.0, you can speak your notes, but the original audio won't be saved with the transcription.
    Photo notes
    1. Touch the Camera icon  at the top of the screen.
    2. Choose to take a photo, or include an existing photo when creating a note within the Keep app.
    3. Touch below the image to add text, then touch the Keep icon  at the top left corner when you’re ready to save.

    To remove the photo, touch the Remove icon on the photo.

    Manage notes & lists

    Archive

    If you don’t want certain notes to show up on the main app screen, you can archive them. Just swipe a note on the main Keep screen, or touch Menu > Archive while editing a note.

    To view archived notes, touch the Navigation Drawer icon in the top left corner, then touch Archive.

    To unarchive a note, touch & hold it, then touch the Unarchive icon. You can also touch Menu > Unarchive while editing a note.

    Share

    Touch Menu > Share while editing a note to share it via Google+, Gmail, and more. You can also touch & hold a note on the main Keep screen, then touch Menu > Share.

    Tip: You can share content from apps like Gallery or Chrome to Google Keep. To do so, touch Menu > Share within the app you want to share from.
    Edit

    To edit a note, open it, make your changes, and touch the Keep icon  at the top left corner.

    To change the color of a note:

    1. While editing a note, touch the Color icon  at the top of the screen.
    2. Touch the color.

    To add a photo to a note:

    1. While editing a note, touch the Camera icon  at the top of the screen.
    2. Choose to take a photo, or include an existing photo when creating a note within the Keep app.

    If you open an existing note or list without a title, the title field is hidden. It reappears while editing or entering text in the note.

    Delete

    To delete a note, touch & hold a note, then touch Menu > Delete. You can also touch Menu > Delete while editing a note.

    To view deleted notes, touch the Navigation drawer icon, then touch Trash. To bring back a deleted note, touch & hold a note in Trash, then touch the Restore icon.

    Touch Menu > Empty trash to permanently delete notes, or open a note and touch Menu > Delete forever. Notes in the trash are deleted forever after seven days.

    Conflicting edits

    If you edit the same note on multiple devices and one of the devices is offline, you may see a conflicting edits notification. To resolve this issue, follow these steps:

    1. Within the notification, touch Fix.
    2. Select a note to keep, or choose Keep both to save both versions of the note.

    2. To add a title, click Title and start typing.

    Make a copy of a list

    If you have a list you use frequently, like a shopping or packing list, you can make a copy of it without having to uncheck the items.

    List settings

    Photo notes

    To create a photo note, follow these steps:

    1. Click the Add image icon in the box at the top of the page.
    2. Click Choose an image, then add a title and text. You can also drag an image into the box.
    3. To close the note, click Done.

    To remove a photo from a note, touch the  Remove icon in the lower right corner of the image.

    Archive

    To archive a note, hover over the note, and then click the Archive icon Archive icon.

    To see your archived notes, click the navigation drawer icon in the top left corner of the page and select Archive. You can also search for archived notes.

    Delete

    To delete a note, hover over the note, click More, then click Delete.

    To view deleted notes, click the Navigation drawer, then click Trash.

    If you want to bring back a deleted note, follow these steps:

    1. Hover over the note, then click More.
    2. Click Restore.

    To permanently delete notes, click Empty trash at the top of the screen, or hover over a note and click More > Delete forever. Notes in the trash are deleted forever after seven days.

    Choose notes layout

    You can see your notes in a list or a grid. To toggle between these views, click the List View or Grid view icons to the right of the “Add note” box at the top of the page.

    To see archived notes, reminders, or all notes, click the Navigation drawer in the top left corner or the page.

  3. Reminders in Google Keep

    You can add time and location reminders to new and existing notes in Google Keep.

    Reminders on Android

    You can set reminders in two ways:

    • When creating a note or editing an existing note, touch Remind me at the bottom of the note and edit the reminder details.
    • Touch & hold an existing note, then touch the Reminder icon at the top of the Keep screen.

    You can only add one reminder at a time to a note.

    Keep displays a notification reminder at the top of the screen. Swipe down from the top of the screen to view the notification or choose to be reminded later. Touch the notification to open the original note.

    If you use Google Now, a card appears to alert you of the reminder in the Keep app. Swipe the card away to dismiss it.

    Time reminders

    To receive a reminder at a particular time:

    1. Touch Remind me while editing a new or existing note.
    2. Select the Time reminder icon .
    3. Choose the date and time.

    When you go back to the main Keep screen, the reminder appears at the bottom of the note.

    Tip: To add a quick reminder to an existing note, touch & hold the note on the main Keep screen and select the Reminder icon at the top. Then choose the time you want to receive the reminder.

    Location reminders

    To be reminded to do something at a location the next time you’re nearby:

    1. Touch Remind me while editing a new or existing note.
    2. Select the Location reminder icon and enter the name or address of the location.
    3. Choose one of the search results that show up below, or touch Done on your keyboard.

    It's recommended to have Wi-Fi turned on in order to get more accurate location reminders and conserve battery usage. If you have a Nexus or Google Play edition device running Android 4.4, learn how to set your device's battery usage to "high accuracy" mode.

    When you go back to the main Keep screen, the reminder appears at the bottom of the note.

    Tip: To add a quick reminder to an existing note, touch & hold the note on the main Keep screen and select the Reminder icon at the top. Then touch Pick a location and enter the name or address of the location.

    Reminder notifications & resetting reminders

    If you set a time or location reminder, you are notified once for that reminder. When you see the notification at the top of the screen, you can snooze the reminder or choose to be reminded later or the next time you're near the location.

    You can also reset a reminder that was already issued by opening a note with a past reminder and changing the reminder details.

    Manage reminders

    To manage upcoming reminders in Google Keep, open the main Keep screen and touch the Navigation Drawer icon , then touch Reminders.

    Delete a reminder

    Open an existing note and touch the Remove icon  next to the reminder.

    Reminders on the web

    You can use Google Keep to create time and location reminders for new and existing notes.

    Add a reminder

    To add a time or location reminder, click the Remind me icon at the bottom of a note or list.

    To set a time reminder, follow these steps:

    1. Pick a time and a date for which you want to be reminded.
    2. Click Remind me.

    To set a location reminder, follow these steps:

    1. Click the Location tab.
    2. Search and select a location in the box that appears.
    3. Click Remind me.

    You can set up location reminders on your computer, but the reminder notifications will only appear on your Google Keep app for Android.

    Manage reminders

    To manage your reminders, click the navigation drawer icon in the top left corner of the page, then click Reminders.

    Delete a reminder

    To delete a reminder, click the time reminder icon or location reminder icon on the note, then click the Remove icon.

    Turn on location in Chrome

    If you see a Chrome browser notification to turn on your computer's location, click Allow so Google Keep can show you more accurate results for location reminders.

  4. Search & sync in Google Keep

    Your notes are automatically synced to Google so you can view them on other devices and the web.

    Search notes on Android

    You can search your notes at any time - just touch the Search icon at the top of the main Keep screen and type your search terms.

    To ensure that Google Keep is syncing, go to the Accounts section in your Settings menu, then touch the account associated with Google Keep. The box next to Google Keep should be checked, and it also shows when the app last synced.

    Search notes on the web

    Click the box that says "Search Google Keep," type your search terms, and click the Search icon.

    Search for printed text in photos, such as images of receipts, by typing out words in the image. (Available in English only.)
  5. Google Keep widgets

    Some or all of this information applies only to devices running Android 4.2 and higher.

    You can easily create notes by adding one of the Google Keep widgets to a Home or lock screen. The Google Keep widget displays your existing notes and provides a quick way to create a new note, and the other Google Keep widget allows you to easily create a new note from a Home or lock screen.

    Add a widget to the Home screen

    Nexus 5 & devices using Google Now Launcher
    1. Touch & hold any empty section of a Home screen.
    2. Touch Widgets.
    3. Touch & hold a Google Keep widget. Windows indicating each Home screen appear.
    4. Slide the widget to the Home screen you prefer, then lift your finger.

    You'll get to choose what Google Account you want to use with the Keep widget.

    Devices running Android 4.2 to 4.4
    1. Go to the Home screen where you want to place the widget.
    2. Touch the All Apps icon.
    3. Swipe right, if necessary, to find the Google Keep widgets.
    4. Touch & hold the widget you want until the Home screen appears, slide it into place, and lift your finger.

    You'll get to choose what Google Account you want to use with the Keep widget.

    Add a widget to the lock screen

    Note: For devices running Android 4.4, lock screen widgets are off by default. To turn them on, go to Settings > Security, then touch the box next to "Enable widgets."

    1. In portrait mode, swipe right across the upper part of the screen until you see the Plus icon. In landscape mode, swipe right from the left side of your screen.
    2. Touch the Plus icon. If prompted, enter your PIN, pattern, or password. A set of the available widgets appears.
    3. Touch the Google Keep widget you want to add.
  6. Google Keep Chrome app

    Download the Google Keep Chrome app

    You can use the Google Keep Chrome app to take quick notes while you're browsing the web. The app keeps working even when you're offline.

    Add Google Keep to Chrome

    Open & use the Google Keep Chrome app

    1. Open a new tab in Chrome.
    2. Click Apps in the top left corner.
    3. Click Google Keep.

    You need to sign in to Google Keep with the same account you're using for Chrome. Learn how to add and manage user profiles on Chrome.

    Once you're signed in, you can use the Keep Chrome app the same way as Keep on the web.

Known issues

  1. Can't sign in to the Google Keep Chrome app

    If you can't sign in to the Google Keep Chrome app, try the following steps:

    1. Make sure you're signed in to Google Chrome with the same account you're using for Google Keep.
    2. Close the Google Keep Chrome app, then open it again.
  2. Google Keep widget doesn't work

    If you're using a device running Android 4.0, you currently can't use the Google Keep widget.

  3. Conflicting edits in Google Keep

    If you edit the same note on multiple devices and one of the devices is offline, you may see a conflicting edits notification. You might also see this notification if your device is on a Wi-Fi network with low bandwidth.

    To resolve this issue, follow these steps:

    1. Within the notification, touch Fix.
    2. Select a note to keep, or choose Keep both to save both versions of the note.
