Clean up your inbox with bundles

Using Inbox, you can group similar emails into a bundle to help manage your emails better.

How bundling works

Bundles group emails together in your inbox. Whenever an email in a bundle arrives, you’ll see a bundle like this in the inbox:

At a glance, you can see:

  • How many total emails are in the bundle: A light gray number like "25+" is the total number of emails with that label.
  • Who the senders of the emails are: Sender names show up at the top of the bundle and show up in boldface if the email is unread.
  • How many new emails are in the bundle: A message like "2 new" means two new messages with that label have arrived since you last opened it.

You can also change how often you see specific bundles in your inbox and turn bundling on and off any time.

First, choose which labels you want to bundle

Before you can bundle your emails into topics of your choice, you have to choose or set up labels.

Use Inbox’s pre-existing labels

Inbox has labels already set up to group common types of emails:

  • Promos: deals, offers, and other marketing and promotional messages
  • Social: notices from social networks and other social media services
  • Updates: notifications from online accounts, such as alerts and confirmations
  • Finance: money-related messages, such as bills and bank statements
  • Purchases: receipts, shipping updates, and other info from stores and companies
  • Trips: Travel-related emails, such as flight confirmations and hotel reservations
  • Forums: messages from mailing lists and discussion groups
  • Low Priority: emails you’ve labeled as less important

All of the labels you have set up in Gmail show up in Inbox’s Menu Menu.

Then, set up and use bundles

Turn bundling for your labeled emails on or off

You can bundle emails with the same label in bundles, or have messages show up individually.

  1. Go to Inbox.
  2. In the top left corner, click Menu Menu.
  3. Next to the label you want to change, click Settings Settings.
  4. Turn "Bundle messages in the inbox" on or off.
Stop bundling newsletters and events

If you don't want Inbox to group news emails or Calendar emails, unbundle them. If you’ve turned bundles like Updates or Promos on, your emails could be bundled there.

Warning: Unbundling a newsletter or event can’t be undone.

  1. On your computer, open Inbox.
  2. Click a newsletter or event bundle.
  3. Click More More and then Unbundle.
Bundle emails automatically

You can automatically add emails to a bundle based on criteria like who the email is from or keywords in the email.

  1. Go to Inbox.
  2. In the top left corner, click Menu Menu.
  3. Next to the label you want to bundle, click Settings Settings.
  4. Under "Automatically add messages," click Add.
  5. Next to "From," click the Down arrow Down Arrow. Then choose an option from the dropdown list.
  6. Enter a name, email address, or keyword.
  7. Optional: To include more criteria, click And, then repeat steps 6 to 8.
  8. When you're done adding criteria, click Save.
  9. Repeat steps 5–8 for other kinds of emails you want to add to your label.

Note: After you’ve set up bundles, any new emails that match the criteria you set will be bundled when they arrive. To add old emails to a bundle, you’ll need to add them manually.

Choose how often bundles show up in your inbox
  1. Go to Inbox.
  2. In the top left corner, click Menu Menu.
  3. Next to the label you want to bundle, click Settings Settings.
  4. Make sure "Bundle messages in the inbox" is turned on.
    • To show the label once a day or once a week, under "Show bundle" click an option.
    • To have the label skip the inbox, turn off "Bundle messages in the inbox." Then check the box next to "Skip the inbox." 

Note: Emails that are set to skip the inbox will be automatically archived in Gmail as they arrive.

View live updates

Some labeled emails, such as Purchases and Trips, automatically update with the latest information, such as package shipments or flights times. You can click those updates to get more information about your existing purchase, trip, or other service.

How Inbox makes live updates

Google doesn't share additional information from your Google Account with that service, and Google employees don't look at your emails to offer these updates.

Bulk senders – such as airlines, package delivery services, and online retailers – can format their emails to display important information like your flight number and package shipping information. To make sure that the feature is meeting our quality standards, Google might review email templates that have been automatically generated from aggregated bulk messages. These templates include no personal information and are simply a way of checking that our system is accurately reflecting the formatting of these bulk messages.
