Use the Zapier bot

Use the Zapier bot in Hangouts Chat to get messages about Zap actions. You can add the Zapier bot to a room, or send it a direct message, and the bot sends messages from the Zap to Chat.

Before you begin

Set up the Zapier bot in Hangouts Chat

Set up Chat to get messages from a Zap.

  1. Open Chat.
  2. Open a direct message with the bot or go to a room where the bot was added.
  3. Enter the command allowzaps. In rooms, enter @Zapier allowzaps.
The bot shows a card to allow Zaps.
  4. Click Click To Allow Zaps.
  5. Sign in to the work or school account you use for Hangouts Chat.
A message confirms that Zaps can send messages to this chat for you.

Stop Zaps in Chat

  1. Open Chat.
  2. Open a direct message with the bot or go to a room where the bot was added.
  3. Enter the command stopzaps. In rooms, enter @Zapier stopzaps.
The bot shows a card to stop Zaps.
  4. Click Click To Stop Zaps.
A message confirms that Zaps can no longer send messages to this chat for you.

Connect a Zap to Hangouts Chat

To integrate with Chat, you need to set up a Zap action. Here's a summary of the steps in Zapier. For detailed instructions, visit the Zapier website.

  1. Open Zapier.
  2. Create a Zap or open an existing Zap.
  3. Add an Action step to the Zap:
    1. Choose the Hangouts Chat app.
    2. Save the Create Message action.
    3. Connect your Google Account. This is the work or school account you use for Chat.
    4. Set up a template for the messages. You can choose Chat rooms where you added the bot and allow zaps.

The Zap can now contact the Zapier bot and send messages to Chat.

Using the bot in rooms

In rooms, you need to explicitly @mention the bot in each message to the bot (including in replies to messages from the bot). The @mention confirms you're sending the message to the bot and not to others in the room.
