What’s new in Chat vs. classic Hangouts

Hangouts Chat introduces features, such as:

  • Rooms where teams can collaborate and hold conversations
  • Share documents and files from Drive or your computer/mobile device
  • Search for text, people, and rooms, with filtering
  • Rich previews for web links
  • Support for bots, including letting third parties develop bots
  • Expand rooms and direct messages to use the full Gmail window

Chat and classic Hangouts interoperability

Hangouts Chat and Meet together are the next version of Hangouts. They'll replace the original version (classic Hangouts) in G Suite.

Like classic Hangouts, Hangouts Chat has both direct messages and group messages.

  • Direct messages—Direct messages sent from classic Hangouts or Hangouts Chat can be viewed and replied to in the other product.
  • Group conversations—Group conversations in classic Hangouts or Hangouts Chat can't be viewed or replied to in the other product. Group messages are not compatible between the two products.

We recommend recreating any group conversations you want to continue in Hangouts Chat.

Notifications

Conversation pop-up windows display by default for new threads, threads you're following, and direct messages. You can change these settings in Notification settings.
