GoogleVideoSupportPluginImstaller Runs for Hours, high CPU, does not succeed 1 Recommended Answer 24 Replies 141 Upvotes

v78 of Chrome, Win 10, Every few hours a new instance of the video plugin installer exe kicks off and runs in parallel with the other(s) in place. Each instance takes ~ half a core and there is also always one MsiExec that terminates (similar usage) when the process is manually killed in task manager. The processes originate from \users\<me>\appdata\local\google\update\install\{GUID} - deleting the directories / files does no good, the updater downloads it after a few hours and tries again.

Video plugin installer is v 19.9.2600.0, 10,692,592 bytes

I'd like a way to stop this automated install or have it succeed. It seems I can do neither right now.

Same thing here.

For the past couple few days my PC will suddenly get really laggy and I'll open task manager to see both GoogleVideoSupportPluginInstaller and msiExec using a ridiculously high amount of CPU.

Not sure why or how it's trying to install in the first place as I disabled google update the other day when it first started as it never actually installs and both processes just sit there at over 90% CPU choking most of my 16GB ram after a few minutes. They have to be killed in the task manager manually every single time, yet somehow they keep coming back.

Some more info --
In users/<user>/AppData/Local/Temp there are log files that grow into multiple gigs, they are named "google_video_plugin_installer_01d59bb48cdfa3d1.log"

and are filled with several million lines of:
I1115 12:55:08.370229   12252 msi_util.cc:37] C:\Users\<user>\AppData\Local\Temp\google_video_plugin_msi_{F9B579C2-D854-300A-BE62-A09EB9D722E4}01d59bb48cdfa3d1.log

Over and over, same 3 lines.

If it helps, I was on Chrome Dev channel when this issue first started, I uninstalled chrome and installed the stable channel and the issue persisted.

Looking into the registry now to see if there are keys I can delete to prevent it from trying again... but eh, will see what happens.

C:\Users\%user%\AppData\Local\Temp contains a couple of Google Talk and Google Video logs such as: google_talk_plugin_installer_01d59964cad9bc9e.log

The files weight 23GB in total and just keep expanding..

The content of the log repeats with the following lines:
