How do I sync chat notifications between laptop web browser and Hangout app?

I have Hangouts running on my Nexus 4  and am often simultaneously chatting in Gmail via Chrome on my laptop. Previously if I had a chat notification on the phone but saw the chat in Gmail first, the chat notification would automatically disappear from on the phone. However since upgrading to Hangouts this no longer happens, so I'm left with notifications on my phone for chats that I've already seen in my browser but my phone thinks they're new.

Anyone know how to fix this without just disabling notifications completely on phone?

Hello,
I don’t think you did anything wrong, synchronization of notifications is a built-in and core feature of Hangout. You can always check if you suspended notifications, but I don’t think you did that. So, I think there’s it’s either a latency issue between your phone, the Google servers and your computers, or a bug on the Google side. I’m not an official Googler, though.
So, for the moment, I hope that someone who knows better the internals will reply.
Thanks for reporting.

Hi Adam,

As Linux suggests, this shouldn't be happening.  What phone are you using Hangouts with, and what version of the Hangouts app are you using?  A small fix is being rolled out that may not have hit your device yet.

Let me know!

Hi Adam

I'm not sure if you are able to remove a notification once it has been displayed on your phone.
I could imagine that the message wasn't read instantly by you in your browser, could this be true?
Do notification show up even when you are active and typing in Hangouts?

Is the phone connected to WiFi or mobile data?

Cheers
Nick

Thanks for the responses everyone. In response to the questions posed...

dziegman - phone is LG Nexus 4 running Android 4.3 with Hangouts 1.1.1.753199.

Nick - I think it's happened when phone is connected via WiFi and mobile data but not certain. It's definitely happened when on WiFi (it happened yesterday when I was at home!)

Hello,
I think you should also reply to the first question of Nick: the notification doesn’t appear as read on your phone even when you’re actively typing inside the Hangout on your laptop? Because Hangouts has several ways of knowing that you read or not a message.
Thanks for replies.

I'm dealing with the exact same problem since upgrading to Hangouts and it's incredibly annoying, especially when I'm on the computer and my phone is next to me!

I was having this same problem (Nexus 4 phone as well) when I found this thread earlier but since discovered that updating to Hangouts from Chat within Chrome seems to have done the trick. When I clicked on my name in the left-hand bar of my inbox where I'd click to sign out, change your away message, etc., I had an option to "Try the new Hangouts" or something like that. After updating from the old Chat to the new Hangouts, my phone notifications now disappear after I read the messages on my computer, whereas before I had to manually remove them.
