Experiencing very high battery drain on newest version of Hangouts (2.1.076)

Hello,

I just installed the newest version of Hangouts (2.1.076) and it is draining my battery very quickly. Is anyone else experiencing this? It is using around 30% of my battery, which is more than my screen - the old version would typically take up about 4-5%...

Running an AT&T Galaxy S5, on 4.4.2

I woke up this morning, my battery was dead. When I saw it was Hangouts that took the power, expected to see a massive chat list (and how  motog had been ping-pinging for 8 hours) but there was none. I've sent feedback via mobile - is there anything else I can do to to investigate this? This is the second time, I've had battery drain just once before, the other time was an issue with phone searching for wifi aggressively (I've since uninstalled a few apps, that I thought were the cause).. thanks.. App: 2.1.076

Same here.

Since updating to the latest 2.1 release, my hangouts is by far and away the biggest battery drain on my phone, even when mostly on standby and not messaging - it can easily account for 40+% of all app power use (per GSam battery).

I rolled back to the stock version of hangouts that came preloaded on my phone (2.0.217, 944332-30) and it has rectified the situation.

I'm using a HTC One M8 on stock HTC rom based on 4.4.2 with no mods.

Please fix google - the new features/integration on 2.1 is great, just the battery is poopy...

The other issue of course is the Chrome Ext for Hangouts, I have that turned off too as sucks CPU out my duo core laptop win7 ..

I decided to look a little deeper. So I upgraded back to the latest version available on the Play store for me, 2.1

It looks like the drain is that it is needing a lot of CPU power.

Screenshots attached.

GSam Battery reports that, for today, with 6H43M of on time, hangouts has required 1H58M of CPU usage

Compare that to another messaging service:
whatsapp 1M49S
Line 1M20S

Even the kernel itself is just 45M

I've since rolled back to stock.

Have a look in SEttings > Apps > Hangouts for the version, see slide where I had another update this morning.
Battery is fine, although I've had many alerts for missed hangouts, from back as far as June 2013 .. Hope they stop.
