Hangouts and Google+ Android apps will not connect (Google Play Services issue?

When I open Google Plus, I get this error "Couldn't connect to the server." and when I open Hangouts I get this one: "Couldn't sign in, possibly because there's a problem with Google account permissions." It doesn't make sense because all of the other apps I use that have had no problems (Google Play, Gmail, YouTube, Google Voice) and the problem only affects Google+ and Hangouts. I have had this problem for months. It is extremely frustrating.

It makes no difference whether I try to connect over WiFi, or 3g or 4g. It's very strange and frustrating, especially since I've been using Google voice since before Google even acquired the company (then called GrandCentral) and have been waiting with baited breath for MMS support, and now that it's finally arrived I can't use it because of this issue!

I have scoured the web looking for answers, but as of yet have not found anything that works for me. There seem to be two main solutions that other people have found helpful.

This one, but I do not have any "Android Login Service" instances in my Google account's security settings:
http://www.atmasphere.net/archives/2013/11/11/in-need-of-some-serious-google-account-help/comment-page-1

And this one, but I have tried it but it didn't fix anything:

I hope that the above links will help others who are looking for a solution, but there seem to be many of us who's issue can't be solved with either of the above. If that's you, have you found anything that does work? Can anybody elevate this request within Google so that we can finally connect to Hangouts and G+ on my phone?

Please provide your OS, browser or mobile app version, and any other details that you consider relevant, so we can address your issue or question quickly.

I don't know when exactly this issue started, but it has persisted for months and through all of the versions of Hangouts, Google+, and any other related apps released during that time. I am now on the most recent version. I am running the latest version of Android on a Nexus 5.

Hi there, kẏra -

Welcome to the Hangouts Help Forum, welcome!

You are not the only one who has been experiencing this error message recently.

Can you please refer to this thread where users wrote in about a similar error message, and let me know if it's the same as what you are seeing?

If so, please give the post marked "Best Answer" a try. I will also be duplicating this issue to that thread so all users having the same problem can be the first to know of any updates and/or solutions.

If not, we can continue troubleshooting together.

Let me know what you find :)

Best,
Natalie R. W.

That looks like the same set of instructions that are in the second link I posted, and the results are the same. After uninstalling the updates to Google Play Services, if I launch hangouts, it asks me which account to sign into, then it crashes. If I re-open it, I get the same error as before (can't connect).

I also believe this is a separate issue because it is not a recent update that caused it as I have had this problem for a very long time.

Hi again, kẏra -

Thanks for your patience!

Can you please try downloading any other app and let me know if you also experience the same error message with any new app that you download.

This way, we can check if it is specific to just the Hangouts App, or possibly Google Play overall.

Best,
Natalie R. W.

As i said, all other apps are unaffected. I can download, update, and use all other apps. (and I had just updated to the latest version of Google Play) Both 3rd party apps and Google apps. Google Calendar, Gmail, YouTube, etc all work perfectly. It is *only* Google+ and Google Hangouts that are affected by this issue.

This problem has been unchanged for months on my phone, and everything else works normally.
