Change my status and profile photo

You can share your photo, a status message, and what device you're on with your contacts in Hangouts. You can also show other people when you're on a video or a phone call. With custom status messages, you can tell friends and family when you're busy or not in town.

Status options that are available in Google Chat, like "busy" or "invisible," are not available in Hangouts.

Share what you're doing

You can change your status settings from any device where you sign in with the same Hangouts account.

  1. Open Hangouts at or in Gmail.
  2. Open settings:
    • On Click Menu  > Settings.
    • On Gmail: At the top of your Hangouts list, click the Down arrow .
  3. Choose any or all of the following things to share:

    • Status message: Type a custom status message, like "in a meeting" or "on vacation." Your status will be available to everyone you use Hangouts with.

When you set a status, your contacts can view it when they open the contacts list on Hangouts. You can also see your contacts' status from your contacts list.

Show when you were last seen online

Check the box if you want your contacts to see when you were last on Hangouts. If you're currently available on Hangouts, they'll see a green circle on your photo.

If you uncheck this box, your contacts won't see the last time you were online or the green circle.

Note: Even if you uncheck this setting, someone may still see that you're online if you do the following:

  • Click a Hangouts message window
  • Share your device status
  • Show whether you're in a video or phone call
Show which device you're on (phone, tablet, or computer)
Check the box to show which device you're currently on. Uncheck to stop sharing your device status.

If you use Google+, your Hangouts profile photo is the same as your Google+ profile photo. You may also change your photo from within your Google+ settings.

Invisible is only available for Google Chat

"Invisible status" isn't available in Hangouts, but you can use it by reverting to Google Chat. When you set your Google Chat status to invisible, Hangouts users will see you as unavailable.

In Hangouts, you have other options to share your status and availability, like showing when you were last seen on Hangouts or which device you're on.

Tip: If you're busy and you don't want to be notified of text messages or calls, you can mute notifications. People who send you messages or invite you to video calls won't be notified that you muted notifications.
