Make calls from Hangouts on iOS

You can place domestic and international calls using a WiFi or data connection (like 4G) through Hangouts on iOS devices. If you’re in the U.S. and have a Google Voice number, you can also receive calls.

Calls to the U.S. and Canada are currently provided by Google free of charge from all countries where Hangouts calling is available. Also, you can make calls outside of the U.S. and Canada with low international rates.

Remember, if you use your data connection to make a phone call, you'll be using your cell phone’s data plan. Contact your mobile carrier for details about your data coverage and cost.

Add your contacts

If you’re using Hangouts for the first time, add your contacts before making a call by following the steps below.

  1. Open the Hangouts app on your iOS device.
  2. The first time you start a new Hangout, you’ll be asked whether Hangouts can access your iOS contacts. Touch OK.
  3. You can also sync your Google contacts with your iOS device using CardDAV.

Make a phone call

The option to make a call is only available for some countries. Learn more about which countries you could make a call.

  1. Open the Hangouts app on your iOS device.
  2. Tap the  calls icon to start a new call through Hangouts.
  3. Touch the  dial pad in the top right corner of the screen.
  4. Enter a phone number or touch People to search for a contact in your phone’s address book.
  5. Once you enter a phone number, touch Call. Or if your contact has multiple phone numbers, select the one you want to call.

For calls outside of the U.S. or Canada, you’ll need a Google account or an existing Google Voice account to add calling credit for the call’s cost. If you’re dialing to locations other than the U.S. or Canada, you’ll see how much the call will cost while you’re dialing. If you don’t have enough Google Voice calling credit to make the call, we’ll show you a warning message, and you’ll need to add more credit.

Other ways to make phone calls directly from your Contacts or Hangouts list

  • Choose a Hangout with the person > Touch the   menu icon > Touch Voice.
  • Swipe the Hangout with the contact from right to left and touch Voice.
  • During a Hangout, touch the contact’s name at the top of the screen and touch Voice.

If your call doesn’t work or disconnects:

  • Calls must have at least a 3G data connection or robust WiFi connection to work.
  • You need to have an iOS 6 or higher operating system.

Call history

You can see your call history in the “Calls” tab in the Hangouts app.

For Google Voice users in the U.S., your missed calls in the Hangouts app aren’t available in “Call history” on the Google Voice website. Also, incoming calls to your Google Voice number in the Hangouts app won’t show the contact’s name in the app’s call history.

Calls from your Hangouts app won’t use your cell phone carrier’s voice minutes, but it will use your data plan. Contact your cell phone provider for more details on charges and usage.

Calls to the U.S. and Canada are currently provided by Google free of charge.

For all other calls, you’ll need to have calling credit to take advantage of our low rates. To get calling credit, you need to go outside of the Hangouts app and use your iOS device’s web browser or computer and go to the Google Voice billing page.
