Make a phone call with classic Hangouts

You can use Hangouts to call international and domestic phone numbers.

Important: Google plans to shut down Google Voice integration with classic Hangouts in early 2021. You can export your classic Hangouts data until mid-June 2021. Read about changes to Hangouts with Google Voice.

If you are in the US, you can continue to make phone calls by upgrading to Google Voice. If you are not in the US or do not want to upgrade to Google Voice, you can continue to use the Hangouts call phones feature until early 2021 with access to classic Hangouts. You can also request a refund of your eligible calling credit.

Before you start

Important: You cannot place or receive emergency service calls in Hangouts.

• Most calls to the US and Canada are free from all countries/regions where Hangouts calling is available. Some US and Canadian destinations will cost 1 cent per minute (USD) or for your local currency's listed rate. Calls to destinations outside of the US are at these rates, but calls aren't available to all locations.
• Check the system requirements.
• Connect a microphone and speakers. Make sure they have the latest software.
• Make sure you allow Hangouts to use your microphone.
• To receive phone calls, text messages, and voicemails, set up Google Voice or a Project Fi account, which are currently only available in the U.S.
• Internet Explorer: Download and install the latest version of the Hangouts plugin here. Currently, some versions of Firefox can't be used to make video calls. Learn why and how you can continue to make video calls. 

Make a phone call

If you use Hangouts to make a phone call with a Google Voice account, it shows your Google Voice number.

1. On your computer, go to Hangouts at hangouts.google.com or in Gmail.
2. Click the Call tab .
   • In the search box, type a phone number or name. To enter an international country code, click the menu or in the search box, type it in. For example, type +55 for Brazil.
   • Click the phone number or person's name that you want to call.
   • To enter an extension, click the Dialpad .
3. To end a call, close the Hangout window or click End call . The call ends if you run out of calling credit.

Access your call history

1. On your computer, go to Hangouts at hangouts.google.com or in Gmail.
2. Click the Phone tab .
3. Click New conversation  Add credit .
4. Your calling credits, call, and billing history will show up in Google Voice.

Fix problems when you buy calling credit
