Start a Hangout

With Hangouts, you can send and receive messages and make video calls with one person or with a group of people.

Start a Hangout

  1. On your Android device, open the Hangouts app .
  2. At the bottom right, tap Compose .
  3. Tap New Conversation.
  4. Type the person's name, and select them from the search results.
  5. Type your message, and tap Send .

To add emoji, photos, your location, or a sticker, tap the icon.

  • Emoji : Include an emoji with your message to show how you're feeling. Tap Send .
  • Photo : Send one or more photos from your device. Tap Send .
  • Camera : Take a photo. Tap Send .
  • Sticker : Add personality to your chat with an illustrated sticker. The message will send immediately after you add the sticker.
  • Location : Add your current location or another location on the map. The message will send immediately after you add the location.

Other types of Hangouts

Group chat
  1. On your Android device, open the Hangouts app .
  2. At the bottom right, tap Compose .
  3. Tap New Group.
  4. For each person in your group, type their name and select them from the search results.
  5. Tap Continue .
  6. Type your message, and tap Send .
Video call
  1. On your Android device, open the Hangouts app .
  2. At the bottom right, tap Compose .
  3. Tap New Video Call.
  4. For each person in your video call, type their name and select them from the search results.
  5. Tap Video call .

When you're done with your video call, you can leave by tapping End call Call end icon.

Phone call

Download the Hangouts Dialer on your Android device. The Hangouts Dialer turns on calling in the Hangouts app.

  1. On your Android device, open the Hangouts Dialer app .
  2. Type the person's name or phone number, and select them from the search results.
    • To dial a number, at the bottom, tap Dialpad Dial pad icon. Dial the phone number you'd like to call, and tap Call .

Almost all calls to the U.S. and Canada are free from all countries where Hangouts calling is available. A few U.S. and Canadian destinations will cost 1 cent per minute (USD), or the listed rate for your local currency. Calls to destinations outside of the U.S. are at low rates.

Text message (SMS)
  1. On your Android device, open the Hangouts app .
  2. At the bottom right, tap Compose .
  3. Tap New SMS.
  4. Type the person's name or phone number, and select them from the search results.
  5. Tap Continue .
  6. Type your message, and tap Send .

Start a Hangout using a screen reader

To learn how to start a Hangout using a screen reader, select the type of Hangout below. Make sure you have your screen reader turned on.

Chat message
  1. On your Android device, open the Hangouts app .
  2. At the top right, select New Conversation. Double-tap to open the options menu.
  3. Select New Conversation and double-tap to open.
  4. Type the person's name, and tap to select them from the search results. Double-tap to open a conversation.
  5. Type your message and swipe left once to select Send . Double-tap to send.
Group chat
  1. On your Android device, open the Hangouts app .
  2. At the top right, select New Conversation. Double-tap to open the options menu.
  3. Select New Group and double-tap to open.
  4. For each person in your group, type the person's name, and tap to select them from the search results. Double-tap to add them.
  5. When all people have been added, navigate to Proceed to conversation and double-tap to open a group conversation.
  6. Type your message and swipe left once to select Send . Double-tap to send.
Video call
  1. On your Android device, open the Hangouts app .
  2. At the top right, select New Conversation. Double-tap to open the options menu.
  3. Select Group Video Call and double-tap to open.
  4. For each person in your video call, type the person's name, and tap to select them from the search results. Double-tap to add them.
  5. When all people have been added, navigate to Proceed to video call and double-tap to open a video call.

When you're done with your video call, select End call and double-tap to leave.
