Manage your contacts

You can manage your conversations, invites, and contacts in Google Hangouts.

Note: The Google+ integration with Google Hangouts has been turned off. Invitation notification settings for contacts previously in "Your circles" are now included in the "Everyone else" setting. You can change notification settings at any time by following the steps in the "Let people contact you without an invite" section below.

See your contacts

  1. On your Android phone or tablet, open the Hangouts app .
  2. At the bottom right, tap Add Add.
  3. Tap New Conversation.
  4. You’ll see a list of your contacts.

Add someone to your contacts

  1. On your Android phone or tablet, open the Hangouts app .
  2. At the bottom right, tap Add Add.
  3. Tap New Conversation.
  4. Type and select a person's name, phone number, or email address.
  5. After you start a conversation, or send them an invite, you can see them in your contacts.

Manage your contacts and conversations

Hide a contact

  1. On your Android phone or tablet, open the Hangouts app .
  2. At the bottom right, tap Add Add.
  3. Tap New Conversation.
  4. Find the person you want to hide.
  5. Touch & hold their name, then tap Hide contact.
Note: You can still get messages from hidden contacts. Learn how to block messages from someone.

See hidden contacts

  1. On your Android phone or tablet, open the Hangouts app .
  2. Tap Menu Menu and then Settings and then your account name.
  3. Tap Hidden contacts.
  4. To see your hidden contacts again, tap Unhide.

See conversations and invites

To see a list of conversations and invites, open the Hangouts app .

Let people contact you without an invite

You can decide who can contact you directly without sending an invitation.

  1. On your Android phone or tablet, open the Hangouts app .
  2. Tap Menu Menu and then Settings.
  3. Under “Account,” tap your account.
  4. Tap Customize invites and choose who needs an invite and who doesn’t.
