Invite phone participants to a video call

You can invite people to a video call by dialing their mobile or landline telephone number. The person will still be able to participate in the discussion without having to be on camera.

To invite phone participants:

  1. Start a video call.
  2. At the top of the video call window, click the 'Invite people' button Invite people to Hangout.
  3. Select +Add telephone.
  4. Enter the phone number.
  5. Click Call.
Dial an extension
If you're calling a phone number that has an extension, use the steps above to invite a phone participant. Once the call is connected, click the dial pad button, and use the dial pad that appears to enter the extension. If the dial pad isn't visible, you can make it to appear by clicking on the phone participant in the film strip.

Add credit for phone calls:

Almost all calls to the U.S. and Canada are free from all countries where Hangouts calling is available. A few U.S. and Canadian destinations will cost USD 1 cent per minute depending on the specific phone number. The 1-cent rate may vary depending on the local currency. Calls to destinations outside of the U.S. are at low rates, but calling isn't available to all locations.

  1. At the top left of the video call window, click the 'Invite people' button Invite people to Hangout.
  2. Select +Add telephone.
  3. Enter the phone number you're calling.
    1. If you're calling an international number, click the price of the call or your credit balance.
    2. In the window that opens, select Add credit.
    3. Complete your credit purchase with your Google Account.

Does making a phone call in Hangouts mean I have a Google Voice account?
The Google Voice account that is created when making phone calls from Hangouts doesn't contain all of the features of Google Voice, like a unique Google phone number.

This account allows you to manage the basics for making calls in Hangouts, such as calling credit. If you're a Hangouts or Google Voice user, your calling credit and call history will be shared across both products.

Only people in the U.S. can have full Google Voice accounts.

What do I do if I'm experiencing issues with billing?

You can request a refund of your entire remaining balance or request credit for a particular call by going to your Google Voice account and following these steps:
