Cannot install license due to "The license file is invalid" error message

Issue ID: 7652168, 7982702

Versions affected: 7.0.14.G.84, 7.0.14.G.114

Summary: When you try to install a license, the search appliance responds with an error message indicating that "The license file is invalid" and shows the license as valid until December 31, 1969.

Cause: This can happen for two reasons:

  1. If the search appliance is in a mirroring configuration.
  2. If you have reset the index on the search appliance.

Fix:

If the search appliance is not in a Mirroring configuration, reboot the search appliance, and then install the license. To do this, follow these steps:

  1. In the Admin Console, go to Administration > Shutdown.
  2. Click the "Reboot the System Now" button, and click "Yes" at the confirmation screen.
  3. Wait for the search appliance to reboot, then log back into the Admin Console.
  4. Go to Administration > License, and install the license that you received from Google.

If the search appliance is in a Mirroring configuration, follow these steps:

  1. Follow the instructions to Deleting Replica Nodes from an Existing GSA Mirroring Configuration to remove GSA with issue from the mirroring configuration.
  2. Go to Status and Reports > Crawl Status and ensure that the crawl is Paused.
  3. Go to Administration > Reset Index.
  4. Click "Reset Index Now" and wait for the reset to complete.
  5. In the Admin Console, go to Administration > Shutdown.
  6. Click the "Reboot the System Now" button, and click "Yes" at the confirmation screen.
  7. Wait for the search appliance to reboot, then log back into the Admin Console.
  8. Go to Administration > License, and install the license that you received from Google.
  9. Follow the instructions to Adding a New Replica to an Existing Master Node to add GSA with issue back to the mirroring configuration.
  10. Repeat steps for each affected node.
