Impact of query suggest on the general search performance

Summary: If there are many concurrent search users doing query suggestions too frequently, the search appliance performance may suffer.

Cause: The value of the timeout before a keystroke is sent to the suggest service is too low. When this happens there will be too many parallel and unnecessary requests being sent to the search appliance.

Workaround: Increase the timeout before a query suggestion request is sent to the search appliance by modifying the frontend XSLT variable ss_wait_millisec. This can be done by:

  1. Go to the Admin Console page Search > Search Features > Front Ends > Output Format (see 7.0 to 7.2 Admin Console mapping for prior page location).
  2. Click on the Edit underlying XSLT code to search for the ss_wait_millisec and increase it.
