I just added several new members to the Google Group that I manage and a few of them did not have @gmail addresses.  They all were successfully added to the member list.
Make sure the format is "Display Name"<MemberName@yahoo.com>
(That is, make sure there is no space between the end quote after display name and the < for the email address.)

Here's what I found:
1. You can't modify an existing name, you have to first delete it.
2. Make sure the name that you want to add or reinstate is in your contacts list exactly the way you want it to appear in the Member list.
3. Select "Add members", start to type in the contact name, and you will see a drop-down list with all your contacts starting with the first letter(s) you entered.
4. Select the desired contact, and it will be added.
Contact MUST be in your Contacts list or it won't appear in the drop-down list, and you won't be able to add it except manually, see the recommended answer above.

This is SO FRUSTRATING! This used to work for YEARS and then Google decided to change it for some unknown reason (like they changed the operation of the Green LED on Nest Cameras for "privacy reasons").

Is there any method to contact Google and file a bug report on this regression? I have not had any luck finding a way to contact support unless you are a G-Suite (Workspace) user.

I have reported the problem to Google Support.  It has taken months (off and on) arguing with them and showing them that it used to be possible.  They just seem to refuse to believe me, even when I send screen images etc showing them that I have groups with Display Names in them.

I finally managed to add the following entry to the Google suggested Features Group.
============
Adding Display Names - First and Last names - to Google Group Members Again

I used to be able to add First and Last Names when I added members to Google Groups.  This meant that I knew who the members of the Group were.

I have groups with hundreds of members in them, and the ability to have Display names showing is VITAL.

I have many older groups that have Display Names in them.  The new groups won't allow me to add or import names with Display Names.

Can you please restore the ability to allow Display Names to be added to Group when either the name is added manually, or imported from a list.

Thanks for the info. It appears Google has restored the method that worked in the old version of Google Groups.
