I am having the same problem entering name<emailaddress> no longer includes the person's name, make finding people who have forgotten their email address impossible.
It's such a backward step by Google Groups and most frustrating. Let's hope they quickly rectify this.

Yes, this is very frustrating. I happen to know the email addresses and can identify the members but I want to have a list with their names as well as their email addresses.

Since the upgrade (???) we cannot enter the NAME of the member -- all that comes up is the email address both under the Name of the member and the Email address of the member.

It is vital Google fix this problem - it would appear the designers have never actually used a group, otherwise the would not have put the update out without the facility of adding names to the email addresses!

Google please fix this issue. I manage a group of almost 400 people. If I cannot readily map email addresses (which most often do not define the member adequately for management) management of the group becomes a nightmare. I've read of concerns where someone's name exposes their private info (their name??). If that is really an issue then perhaps adding a field that is not exposed to other members but can be used by group managers to help identify members.

When are you going to fix this problem? I cannot remember the NAMES of almost 200 members by their email addresses. It's very frustrating. Please, please fix this!!!

I appreciate that the Classic Version works perfectly but this message display across the top of the page worries me that it won't be around much longer. "The new Google Groups offers all your favourite features with a fresh look and will replace classic Groups soon"
How soon is soon?
I am very worried that Classic Groups will be withdrawn before New Groups has rectified this defect.

Thanks for the response. I knew and used the classic interface to
accomplish the task at hand. The real problem is that, if Google does
not fix this in the new interface the ability to accomplish this type of
task will be lost when the classic interface is retired and no longer
available to all.

If we're going to have the "fresh look" shoved down our throats, will this terrible flaw be fixed before the Classic disappears (as is strongly suggested by the language on the Classic view) ?

and Joann for your question there is not no way for a group owner to edit a Groups member name once they been add to the group as the Group member would have to to click on the My Membership Link on the left hand side menu to edit or change their name.

However, I think that is a disadvantage to the owner. People change their email addresses quite often and get married or divorced, or whatever, and want to change their name. Not everyone is computer savvy and often ask the owner/moderator to do it for them.

I want to be able to put the members name as we did before. This upgrade sucks! I manage a HOA group with many members, now I can't see who is there and who is not. Members don't always have their names included in their email address. This is very frustrating!

Yes, I agree - this needs to be fixed. As someone who manages a large group with individual email addresses that don't necessarily include their names in their email, it becomes very confusing as to who is in the list. Have tried "NAME" <EMAILADDRESS" and Name <emailaddress> as well. Needs to be fixed ASAP

My members will NOT join a thread if they do not know the name of the persons posting to the thread. We MUST be able to add a display name when direct adding a new subscriber. Google Groups is almost useless to us without that feature. We will abandon it. What were you thinking?

At the time of adding a new member with the new interface, the display name (First Name, Second Name) is shown - so you think it is going to be stored as it was with the Classic interface. But then the display name is overwritten by the first part of the email address (before the @) so this part of the email address is needlessly duplicated.
Email addresses are often cryptic and as a Google Group Manager I must have access to the display name so that I can adjust a role or delete the right person. This isn’t happening by accident - someone must have thought this was an improvement: can they please be told that it wasn’t!

I just wasted an hour on this, before finding out it is a bug (God help us if it's a feature) of the new interface. I actually started googling "alternatives to Google Groups". PLEASE FIX THIS and DON'T JUST LOCK THE THREAD as so many other threads were misleadingly locked as if the problem had been "solved."

Agreed that creating members with full names (in addition to email addresses) is very important. Switching back to the old Groups interface helps, but that will be disappearing one of these days.

I note that in spite of numerous requests, this simple modification has not bee applied by Google technicians yet - all we seem to get is try New Groups. Please advise when this modification will be applied to New Groups as until then, no Group Administrator in their right mind will be using New Groups.

This option is very important to a lot of us. ALSO: please set it so we can edit names too: people change names, email address, add or subtract family members. I for one will have to go back to using email groups only if not an option, I can't memorize everyone's email address to put with a name

Unbelievable! We worked for three years to get our group directory set up so it displays a person's first name and then their email address (example: John Doe<gdoe@gmail.com>), and now with the new Google Group view, I cannot. This is not acceptable. Now I cannot even switch back to Classic view to fix it because you have disabled the Classic view. Please update the app so we can once again direct add people so we can control the display name in Google Groups. Thank you.

a work around is to change your member privacy to display Google profile only in your groups setting and then that will display the user name from their google account

The classic view is no longer available so that is not an option to resolve this. Plus, changing the profile to show the name would only work if they have a gmail account. Many of my 1800+ members do not have gmail account. There needs to be a better option to resolve this.

This STILL will not work. Why, not everyone who has a Google account has updated their profile to show a meaningful first name, last name. AND...not everyone uses Google. Please tell me how I can control a member's display name as I was able to do under the old version. Others have requested this feature to come back also. Thank you.

That did not work. I am adding new employees to our group and the member name displays their email address not their first and last name. I have been unable to update this information since the classic was updated. Any advice?

Yes, but many of our users have been signed up with their email addresses only, and may not have used a Google account. We need a solution that works with all address scenarios!

Just imported all my groups contacts and names into Mailchimp which allows not only names, but addresses and telephone numbers to be added. Also lets you know whether members have opened their emails. Pity Google just don't listen to us loyal group owners.

I have just had to move from YahooGroups since Verizon terminated the service. With Google I've taken a step backwards not being able to input or edit members' names.
