Mark groups and posts as favorites

If you're signed in to a work or school account, the options you see might be different. To learn more, contact your administrator.

You can mark groups and messages as favorites to make them easy to find. Favorite groups and conversations appear in separate lists on the left navigation panel. You can also organize your favorite groups into folders. See below, Organize favorite groups into folders

Favorites are account-specific. When you mark an item as a favorite, it appears as a favorite in your account only. It doesn't appear as a favorite for anyone else. 

Mark groups and messages as favorites

Using new Groups
  1. Sign in to Google Groups.
  2. To mark a group as a favorite, choose an option:
    • On the far right of the group entry, click the Star "".
    • Click a groupand thento the left of the group name, click the Star "".

    The group is added to your Favorite groups list in the left menu. If you use Groups with more than one domain, the group appears under its domain name on the left.

  3. To remove a group from your Favorites list, choose an option:
    • On the far right of the group entry, click the Star "".
    • Click a groupand thento the left of the group name, click the Star "".
    • In the left panel, click Favorite groups or the domain name. Point to the group nameand thenclick More""and thenUnfavorite group.
  4. To mark a message as a favorite:
    1. Click the group containing the message.
    2. In the left panel, click Conversationsand thenchoose an option:
      • On the far right of a conversation entry, click the Star "". This marks the most recent message in the conversation as a favorite.
      • Click a conversationand thenon the far right of a message, click the Star "".

      The conversation containing the message is added to your Starred conversations list in the left menu.

  5. To remove a message or conversation as a favorite:
    1. Click the group containing the message.
    2. In the left panel, click Conversationsand thenchoose an option:
      • On the far right of a conversation entry, click the Star "". This removes all messages in the conversation as favorites and removes the conversation from the Starred conversations list.
      • Click a conversationand thenon the far right of a message, click the Star "". This removes the conversation from the Starred conversations list unless the conversation contains other messages marked as favorites.
Using classic Groups
  1. Sign in to Google Groups.
  2. Click My groups.
  3. To mark a group as a favorite, choose an option:
    • To the left of the group name, click the Star "".
    • Click the groupand thenbelow the group name, click the Star "". This option appears only if you have permission to view conversations.

    The group is added to your Favorites list in the left menu.

  4. To remove the group from your Favorites list, choose an option:
    • To the left of or below the group name, click the Star "".
    • In the left panel, click Favorites. Point to the group nameand thenclick the Down arrow""and thenRemove from favorites.
  5. To mark a post as a favorite, open a topic, then, to the left of the title of the post, click the Star ""

    Favorite messages appear in the Starred section of the left menu

  6. To remove the post from your Favorites list, click the Star "".

Note: To quickly add or remove multiple topics and posts as favorites: Click the group and thenin the upper right, next to About, click the Down arrow""  and then select Compact list view. To the left of the relevant topics, click the Star "". This marks the topic and the first post in the topic as favorites.

Organize favorite groups into folders

After you mark a group as a favorite, you can assign it to a folder.

Using new Groups
  1. Sign in to Google Groups.
  2. To create a folder:
    1. In the left panel, point to Favorite groupsand thenclick More""and thenCreate folder.
    2. Enter a folder nameand thenclick Create.
  3. To assign a favorite group to a folder: In the left panel, point to the group nameand thenclick More""and thenthe folder name.
    You can switch a favorite group from one folder to a different one.
    You can only assign a group to one folder. However, if you assigned a group to multiple folders in classic Groups, the group appears in all of those folders when you switch to new Groups.
  4. To remove a favorite group from a folder:  In the left panel, point to the group nameand thenclick More""and thenthe folder name to which the group currently belongs. The group is removed from this folder but stays in your Favorite groups list.
  5. To delete a folder: In the left panel, point to the folderand thenclick More""and thenDelete folder
    When you delete a folder, any groups in that folder are removed from Favorite groups.
Using classic Groups
  1. Sign in to Google Groups.
  2. To create a folder:
    1. In the left panel, point to Favoritesand thenclick the Down arrow ""and thenNew folder.
    2. Enter a folder nameand thenclick OK.
  3. To assign a favorite group to a folder: In the left panel, point to the group nameand thenclick  the Down arrow ""and thenthe folder name.
    You can switch a favorite group from one folder to a different one. You can also assign a group to more than one folder.
  4. To remove a favorite group from a folder:  In the left panel, point to the group nameand thenclick  the Down arrow ""and thenthe folder name to which the group currently belongs. The group is removed from this folder. If the group belongs to any other folders, it stays in those folders. If not, it stays in your Favorites list at the top level.
  5. To delete a folder: In the left panel, point to the folderand thenclick  the Down arrow ""and thenDelete folder.
    When you delete a folder:
    • Groups in that folder that belong to other folders remain in those folders.
    • Groups that don’t belong to other folders are removed from Favorites.
