Delete a group or stop members from posting

If you're signed in to a work or school account, the options you see might be different. To learn more, contact your administrator.

If you're a group's owner, you can delete it. Deleted groups:

  • Can’t be restored
  • Don't show up in search results
  • Don't show up in the Google Groups directory

As an alternative to deleting a group, you can stop members from posting or viewing conversations. 

Delete a group

Using new Groups

  1. Sign in to Google Groups.
  2. Click My groups.
  3. Click the name of a group.
  4. On the left, click Group settingsand thenDelete group.
  5. Click Delete group.
  6. Click OK to confirm.

Using classic Groups

  1. Sign in to Google Groups.
  2. Click My groups.
  3. Click the name of a group.
  4. On the right, click Manage group.
  5. Click Informationand thenAdvanced.
  6. Click Delete this group.
  7. In the confirmation box, click Delete group.

Stop members from posting to a group

Using new Groups

  1. Sign in to Google Groups.
  2. Click My groups.
  3. Click the name of a group.
  4. On the left, click Group settings.
  5. Under General, go to Who can post and select a setting.
  6. (Optional) To specify who can see messages, under Who can view conversations, select a setting.
  7. Under Posting policies, go to Who can post as group and select a setting.
  8. Click Save changes.

Using classic Groups

  1. Sign in to Google Groups.
  2. Click My groups.
  3. Click the name of a group.
  4. On the right, click Manage group.
  5. Click Permissions and then Basic permissions.
  6. In the "Post" section, click Select groups of users. Uncheck the group types that should no longer be able to post.
  7. Optional: Stop members from seeing past posts by unchecking their group type in the "View topics" section.
  8. At the top of the screen, click Save.
