"smart" campaign type not available

I tried to create a new campaign, choosing "Create a campaign without a goal's guidance." but then I don't get the option to choose "Smart" as a Campaign Type.

Did the support person not realize you have an Ad Grant and therefore can only create Search ads? Did they perhaps hint at something that's not yet available?

I've heard nothing official about Smart campaigns being removed... but I double checked and the option has recently disappeared from half of the grant accounts I have access to. Not a real problem: Smart campaigns are generally not useful.

Performance Max campaigns are not currently available in Ad Grants accounts. AS and WHEN and IF P-Max does become available, it will be Search placements only and won't include Google Maps (at least at first).

I noticed the option had disappeared from a couple of accounts a couple of days ago. Today, it seems to be back. Suggest you wait a few days and look again.

This possibly reflects some upcoming changes to the way campaigns are created in Ad Grants, so is a glitch while they're making changes.

But... smart campaigns are generally fairly useless and give you almost no useful data, so I recommend you create a standard Search campaign instead.

Hello,
I reached out to customer support yesterday regarding this issue and learned that the Smart Campaign option has been removed. We must now use Performance Max campaign, which also allows us to advertise on Google Maps.

Philip—I heard today from a reputable source (not Google but someone with contacts) that Smart campaigns are being sunset. That might explain why they are no longer available in many grant accounts... and checking again, they are no longer available in any of my accounts so they do seem to be stealthily disappearing as an option.

I received this reply from support when I asked about this same issue (although, not regarding grants): "I understand your concern regarding creating the Smart campaign in the Google Ads account.

As Google evolves its ads offerings, Smart Campaign functionality is transitioning into Performance Max. Performance Max provides all the same benefits of Smart campaigns and more - advertise across all of Google from a single campaign, take advantage of Google AI, and get reliable results tailored to your business's goals. This upgrade may drive even higher return on investment, to take advantage of Google AI and optimize towards your advantage of Google.

Your account is eligible for a new Performance Max campaign, which allows you to find new converting customers across Google Search, YouTube, and more. More information may be available in the coming months."
Update: you will soon be able to create a P-Max campaign in a Google Ad Grant campaign. It was announced today at the Google.org Impact Summit that P-Max is being rolled out to grants accounts over the next few months. So keep an eye open for the new campaign type.

My initial information is that this will enable placement of ads across the entire Google network, not just search ads, so P-Max will work in grants accounts just as it does in paid accounts.
