How to know when keywords are overly generic? 1 Recommended Answer 5 Replies 0 Upvotes

Our account was deactivated recently for having non-compliant keywords. The keyword was flagged for being overly generic, but was obviously not a keyword I would consider too general. Our account has been reactivated, but I'd like to know how to prevent this from happening in the future. Is there a way to filter keywords that have been flagged as overly generic? Or is it up to us to navigate the algorithmic minefield?

Thanks!

Were they one word keywords?  Usually those are the ones that they say are too general.

Could you share an example of keyword(s) flagged as being too generic?

And tell us the url of the landing page.

To some extent you have to rely on common sense. But that only goes so far. And algorithms are never perfect.

Do you receive a mid-month compliance email? Because that would list generic keywords, so you can remove them before you get suspended.

Hi Jason,

Sorry for the late reply on this. We were flagged for "venezuela maduro" and "venezuela currency" on this piece: https://www.foreignaffairs.com/articles/venezuela/2019-03-19/what-military-intervention-venezuela-would-look

We have many keywords that follow a country + theme/leader/another noun but only those were flagged.

We do receive a compliance email, so I suppose I can rely on that.

Thanks,

Katherine

That makes sense. I previously had the keywords running for a different Venezuela piece and copy/pasted them. This is a good lesson for me in the perils of laziness.

Thanks for your help, Jason!
