Why is our website not approved? 0 Recommended Answers 2 Replies 0 Upvotes

Upon submission/application, we received this response from  Google:

Your ads lead to a website that cannot be approved in its current state. The website should pertain to your organization, show a clear mission, substantial content of a non-commercial nature, and be of high-quality. Please refer to the Ad Grants website policy for more information.

Here are the landing pages that  our  Ads link to:

Based on the website policy, there are a few things I think that could be keeping us from  being approved... but it's not clear to me.

  • Pagespeed? We've attempted to make the site/pages faster, but have also read that Shopify sites normally score poorly on Google Page Speed results, even if they are not that bad in reality.
  • Commercial? We've  made it  as clear as possible that our product sales all go to support the nonprofit cause, with photos,  text and story content throughout. But could  this still be the issue, simply because our nonprofit is sustainably funded through Fair Trade e-commerce sales?
  • Our domain (shop.mercyhouseglobal.org) re-directs to a shopify domain https://mercy-house.myshopify.com. I've tried to request new domains added twice, and been denied with really confusing reasons described. Could this be the problem? (because we don't own myshopify.com?)

Other ideas?

Would love anyone's help! At this point, we've spent dozens of hours building ads, editing the  pages, and  submitting multiple times.
I would especially love to hear from  someone who has had experience getting a Shopify/e-commerce related nonprofit approved to see if that could be the issue and  how to overcome it...

Thanks so much for any help you can offer us.

I've twice set up Shopify for nonprofits using Ad Grants. Neither time did we point ads directly at products. Instead, we had sitelink extensions pointed to the shop. And we relied on people visiting the website, then following a link to the shop.

How are you advertising, for example, the earrings? If you're simply using keywords like "earrings" then you're not attracting people who are interested in supporting your specific charity.

Yes, you've made a technical mistake setting up the subdomain. People who click an ad get redirected to a url on Shopify's domain. That should not happen. They should remain on the shop.mercyhouseglobal.org subdomain. It should be simple to fix, see https://help.shopify.com/en/manual/domains/add-a-domain/using-existing-domains/connecting-domains.

Does that irritating huge popup appear when people click an ad? That's off-putting.

Whilst I did see a clear statement about being a nonprofit and that purchases fund the mission, you should also put a statement in the footer of every page. That's where people tend to look.

What about the rest of the website? If you're only running ads for the shop, that's not keeping within the rules. Are you also running ads for your brand / awareness / services?

You have a ton of pop ups. Especially, the who purchased what popup. I hate to see those. It  does not help in making a buying decision. What does work in purchasing decisions are reviews. Don't impede people from the website  with a ton  of popups!
