Most content on Google TV is available in High Definition (HD) and some content is available in 4K Ultra High Definition (UHD).
Content in 4K UHD is sharper and clearer compared to the HD version. While Standard Definition (SD) is also an option, it offers much lower resolution and a less detailed picture than HD and 4K.
Fix issues with video quality
If your purchased content plays with a lower video quality than you expected:
- Check the video quality you purchased: You can only watch up to the quality you purchased and the highest quality your device supports. To find what video quality you purchased, check the receipt in your email.
- Check your internet speed: You need an internet download speed of at least 2 Mbps to play a video in HD or at least 14 Mbps to play a video in 4K.
- Check device compatibility and other requirements: To play a video in a higher quality, you need to use a compatible device. Depending on the video’s quality, your device may need other requirements.
When videos play in HD
Depending on licensing agreements and compatibility with your device, you can play videos in HD. Your video plays in SD if:
- The title isn't available in HD.
- You don't have enough internet speed to stream in HD.
- Your device's display doesn't meet the minimum requirements.
Device compatibility & other requirements
To play a video in a higher quality, you need to use a compatible device and may need to meet other requirements, depending on the video’s quality.
HD video requirementsHD playback is supported on:
- Most Android devices
- iOS devices that run iOS 7 and up
- Chromecast devices used with an HD TV
- Android TV devices
- Other smart TVs with a screen resolution above 720p
- Safari web browsers when played with YouTube
To watch 4K Ultra High Definition (UHD) videos, you need a:
- Compatible 4K Google TV or Android TV device
- Download speed of at least 15 Mbps
When you make a purchase, you’ll find an icon for either HDR , DV
, or HDR10+
.
HDR10, HDR10+, and Dolby Vision playback is only available to 4K UHD videos on compatible devices.
Tip: HDR playback works automatically if your TV supports the various HDR formats. For specific HDR playback instructions, check your TV manufacturer’s support site.
Your Android XR device is optimized for 3D content. When you buy certain content after October 21, 2025, the 3D version may also be offered, providing access to both formats. If you own the 3D version of content, you can only play its 3D version on an Android XR device. The 2D version remains available on all other Google TV devices.
For content that doesn’t have a 3D version, you can still watch it on your Android XR device and on all other Google TV devices in 2D.
Tip:
For content that offers a 3D version:
- If you buy 2D content in standard definition, you’ll also have access to the standard definition 3D version.
- If you buy 2D content in HD or 4K, you’ll also have access to the high-definition 3D version.
