Find something to watch

You can find recommendations for things to watch on your Google TV’s home screen. You can also search for something specific or look for something to watch in a streaming app or on live TV.

Search for something to watch

On a Google TV device:

  1. On your remote, press the Google Assistant button Assistant.
  2. Type or say your search.
  3. You’ll find your results on the screen.

In the Google TV app:

  1. At the top left, tap Search Search.
  2. Type your search.
    • To speak your search, tap Microphone Voice search and then say your search. 
  3. You’ll find your results on the screen.

What you can search for

  • A specific show, like “Game of Thrones”
  • A genre, like “crime shows”
  • An actor or director, like “movies with Meryl Streep”

Watch content from a streaming service

On a Google TV device:

You can either: 

  • Search for a specific movie or show and then open it in a streaming app.
  • Open the streaming app and look for something to watch. 
    • From the “For you” page, find the “Your apps” row and select the service you’d like to watch from. 

Tip: If the service you want isn’t installed on your device, learn how to install apps.

In the Google TV app:

  1. Search or browse to find something to watch.
  2. Open the title’s details page.
  3. To find the services it’s available on, tap the down arrow Down arrow
  4. Choose a service and follow the on-screen instructions.

Tip: To search for shows from a service, you can use search commands like “Hulu shows” or “free movies on HBO.”

Rent or buy a movie or show

On a Google TV device:

  1. Search for the title you want to rent or buy.
  2. Open the title’s details page.
  3. At the bottom, you’ll find the number of “ways to watch.” 
  4. Choose if you want to rent or buy the content.

In the Google TV app:

  1. Search or browse for the title you want to rent or buy.
  2. Open the title’s details page.
  3. Tap the down arrow Down arrowand then Play Movies &  TV Play Movies.
  4. Tap Rent or Buy.

Tip: When you rent or buy a video with Google TV,  it’s added to your Google Play library. Learn where else you can watch your videos.

Watch content you already bought

Important: If you bought content from Google Play Movies & TV or from Google TV, you can find it in your Library. 

On a Google TV device:

  1. Make sure to purchase the content with your TV’s primary account.
  2. From the Google TV home screen, navigate to the “Library” section.
  3. You’ll find your movies and shows in different sections.

In the Google TV app:

  1. At the bottom, tap Library.
  2. You’ll find your movies and shows in different sections.

Watch live TV

To watch live TV, download an app from your TV service provider, if available. Learn how to download apps on Google TV.

Watch live TV on YouTube TV

Important: To watch live TV on YouTube TV, you need a subscription. YouTube TV is only available in some areas. Learn where YouTube TV is available.
  1. On your Google TV, make sure the primary account is the same one you use for your YouTube TV subscription. If they’re not the same, you can:
    • Change the primary account on Google TV.
    • Change your YouTube TV subscription to use your primary account.
    • Use Google Families to link the two accounts. Only the primary account on Google TV will get recommendations.
  2.  You’ll find recommendations for YouTube TV content on the Google TV home screen and in the “Live” tab.
Tip: You’ll only see the “Live” tab if the primary account on your Google TV has an active YouTube TV subscription. Learn about multiple YouTube TV accounts on Google TV.
