What is remuneration for private copying?
The private copying remuneration is intended to compensate the harm suffered by authors, performers and producers for the copying of their works by legitimate purchasers for their personal use on recording media. It allows the consumer to copy legally-obtained creative works for private purposes.
The private copying remuneration is financed by the collection of a flat fee which is applied to each copy of a product allowing the copying of works (such as CDs or DVDs, hard disks, USB keys, devices with integrated memory) and passed on to the final selling price. Therefore, it is already included in the price displayed to the consumer.

- Tablet computers
- USB sticks
- Memory Cards
- Standard external hard drives
- MP3 Walkman
- MP4 Walkman
- Cassettes
- Digital recordable carriers
- Carplayers or built-in GPS with music storage capacity
- Memories & Hard disc integrated in a TV set, a video recorder or a TV decoder/ADSLbox
- Multimedia box or external hard disks not exclusively dedicated to the recording of
- video content
The products concerned and the amount of the applicable remuneration is fixed by the "Commission for the remuneration of the private copy". The remuneration is paid to the "Copie France" collective management company, which is then responsible for redistributing it to the beneficiaries.
