Create web apps

Note: This feature isn't available in all EMM consoles. If you'd like your EMM console to support web apps, contact your EMM provider.

If your EMM provider supports it, you can create web apps and publish them to Managed Google Play from your EMM's console. Web apps are Android apps that you create using a website address (URL), icon image, and title. When a user opens a web app on their device, the app's URL opens in the Chrome Browser.

Web apps are only available to users in your organization and can't be made public. You can distribute them to your users just like other Android apps. To use web apps, your user's devices must have Google Chrome installed.

Note: When you publish a web app, it's automatically approved for distribution via all EMM bindings associated with the same managed Google domain.

Publish a web app

  1. On the left, click Web appsWeb apps.
  2. At the bottom, click AddAdd.
  3. Add a title for your web app as you want it to appear on Managed Google Play.
  4. Enter an HTTPS or HTTP URL for your web app.
  5. Choose a display mode:
    • Full screen—The app opens in full screen mode, hiding the device's status and navigation bars.
    • Standalone—The device's status bar and navigation bar are visible when the app is open (default).
    • Minimal UI—The device's status bar, navigation bar, the app's URL, and a refresh button are visible when the app is open. For HTTP URLs, you can only select this option.

Display mode only applies to pages belonging to the URL. If your web app's URL redirects to a different website, the site will open in Chrome Browser.

  6. Click Upload an icon.
  7. Select your icon and click Upload.

For best results, the icon should bea maskable, 512 x 512pJPG or 32-bit PNG.

  8. At the bottom, click Create.

Web apps are usually published in 10 minutes. While an app is publishing or if publishing fails, the Web apps page lists the app as Not available yet.

Note: Your web app must comply with Google Play Developer Program Policies. If the title or icon you provide uses another app or entity’s brand, title, logo, or name, your app may not be published.

Edit a web app

  1. On the left, click Web appsWeb apps.
  2. Click the web app you want to edit.
  3. Click Edit.
  4. Make any changes and click Save changes.

Updates usually take effect in minutes, but it might take up to 24 hours to be reflected across all of your users' devices, depending on the app update settings. In some cases, users may need to clear the cache from their device's launcher app before any updates to web app titles are reflected in the launcher.

If you edit a web app that was createdbefore February 2022, the shape of your app icon might change. If this applies to your app, ensurethat your icon format followsmaskable icon guidelines.

Delete a web app

Deleting a web app removes it from the Managed Google Play Store for your users. However, users who already have the app installedmay still be able to access it.

  1. On the left, click Web appsWeb apps.
  2. Click the web app you want to delete.
  3. Click Delete.
