ok.  All the advice on the forums about this issue, you do not need.  most for me, did not work for the devices that I use.  But then, I did not  just get the error on my android devices.  It affected my gmail account on my Apple devices too.

I went through all the advice, did everything they advised and NOTHING resolved the issue.  In the end I had to remove my gmail accounts (all of them) from all of my android devices and then reset each of the devices in turn. Here are the FULL instructions on how to remove all email accounts on your android phone, AND how to reset your device (needs more than a simple restart).

1.  Open up your email app.

2.  click the "Options" tab (3 lines top left corner on most devices).

3.  Scroll down to and choose the "Settings" option.

4. Tap the 3 dots (top right on most devices) and choose from that menu "Manage Accounts".  Here you will see a full list of all of the email accounts you have assigned to that device.

5.  Click on the first email address on your list to open up the page.  You should see your gmail address account options, account sync and beneath that the option to "REMOVE ACCOUNT".  click this.

6. Google will ask you if you want to Remove Account.  Choose the "REMOVE ACCOUNT" option.

7.  Repeat for all accounts but remember which one is your google play account.  this is the one all your apps and app progress is stored on.

8.  Hold down the volume down and power on button together until you come to the android tools menu pages (first page of which is the android robot lay down with start in a box pointing to power button.  Ignore this.)

9.  Use your volume keys to navigate through pages to the one that says "Switch Tools Mode" and click power button once.

10. You should now see a "Tools Mode Config:  Enabled" once you have pressed the power button.  If it still shows "DISABLED", try again (Situated above the green "battery ok.")

11.  Next, scroll down using volume keys to "Restart Bootloader".  This will take you back to the "START" SCREEN.

12. Click the power button next to "START" and wait for your phone to boot up.

NOTE:  You will not lose any data doing this.

13.  Go to your gmail account for google play and reset all your settings (instructions for which if you need them, are already on google forums).

14.  Now re-add your "Google Play" gmail Account to your phone.

15.  Go through all your gmail privacy settings and set them to how you want them.

16.  Check Google Play is up and running error free before adding any other email account to your phone.

This was what I had to do when I had this error code.  Hope this helps someone else too :D

Mines still isn't working either. Was basically fobbed off by Google help because it's a manufacturer issue. It was working fine until last night!
The phone is a brand new galaxy S8

If you link another account to access the "Shop" on Google Music and select "Switch Accounts", then it threatens to delete all songs downloaded from Google Music. This Error DF-DFERH-01 is driving me nuts. Shame on you Google. Shame on you.
