Unable to play any rented or owned movies from Google Play Movies 0 Recommended Answers 17 Replies 214 Upvotes

I keep getting the following message when I try to watch anything in my library: "This type of playback isn't supported. To play this video on another device, you'll need to use Chromecast instead of mirroring."

I'm using a Pixel 2 (Android 10 build QP1A.190711.019). The app refuses to let me stream rented or owned content, cast to Chromecast, download and play/cast, or anything else I try. Playback works on PC, but I refuse to watch content there.

I'd like to try fixing the issue before I'm forced to ask for a refund and move my library to a more reliable provider.

Any help would be appreciated.
Thank you.

Forgot to mention that I've already tried rebooting the phone, force-closing and restarting the app, clearing the cache, reinstalling the app and clearing the app storage entirely.

The issue still persists.

I was able to play by uninstalling all updates and using the original version that came with the phone, but then the app gets updated and I have to uninstall again and again.

If you aren't doing screen mirroring, maybe you have another app running that makes it appear that you are.  Make sure you are not running any screen capture apps or others that might try to intercept the playback.

Even if I force close any foreground applications, the videos refuse to play. As I said in the first reply, playback is fine when I roll back to an older version. The problem seems to be with the latest version of Google Play Movies.

I'm not rooted and I don't use any screen recording apps on my device.

Edit: typo

I'm having the same issue on my pixel 2 running Android 10. My camera quit working about 5 weeks ago as well - seriously considering an iPhone at this point... :-\

Exact same issue on a Pixel 2XL. Can't Cast to an LG SmartTV (with a Chromecast) and can't play locally on device. These are all Google products that all of the sudden don't work together. Please fix whatever aggressive rule is set in the Play app that is preventing this from playing.

This unacceptable for something that previously worked and is a PAID product.

Fixed. I had to turn off my DoH VPN service on my device (specifically Cloudflare 1.1.1.1 service). Apparently Google isn't able to sufficiently track you if you attempt to secure your dns queries. Please note that no other casting apps on my device suffer from this issue.

I'm sure the stated reason for not supporting this, will be for regional access to content and some DRM bs.

Google, the error message for this issue is wholly insufficient and misleading. Screen mirroring is not at issue. I simply want to pay a reasonable price for some content and play it on my Google "supported" devices.

I don't know what any of that is, so that can't be the problem. The problem is Google doesn't know what they hell they're doing anymore. Same issue with Pixel XL (Sailfish) running Android Q. The problem began with Android Q. Now j just want a refund for the damn movie and they buried that so deep you can't find it anymore. I am seriously considering getting rid of ALL my Google devices: Two Pixels, two Samsung Galaxy S series phones, my Chromebook, two Cbromecasts, and oh my God I can't even see the rest of the text field.to continue typing this message on my phone

I bought a Chromecast today, got it all set up and now I'm getting this exact issue on my Pixel 2XL. I was watching a movie earlier today through through the Google Play app with no problems. But since I set up the Chromecast I'm getting this issue even when I'm not trying to cast to my TV. My entire movie library can't be accessed because of this
