Change a video's language settings

Each movie and TV show on Google Play Movies & TV will have different language availability for audio playback and captions (subtitles).

Find language and caption details

You can find information about a video's available languages and captions on a movie or TV show's detail page.

On the Google Play Store app for your mobile device
  1. Open the Google Play Store app Google Play Store.
  2. Find a movie or TV show.
  3. Touch Read More.
  4. Look for "Audio Language" and "Subtitles."
On your computer
  1. Go to Google Play.
  2. Find a movie or TV show.
  3. Under the "Additional information" section, look for "Audio language" and "Subtitles."

Select a different audio language

When a video has multiple audio languages available, you can change your preferred language while the video streams. From the Google Play Movies & TV Settings menu, you can also set up default language settings that will be used across all videos you rent or purchase.

Keep in mind not all titles are offered with multiple audio options.

While your video streams

To select a different language for audio playback:

  1. Near the bottom of your video player, touch the Audio Language and Captions icon Closed Captioning.
  2. On the "Audio" menu, select a language from the list.
  3. Touch OK.
For downloaded videos

When you download a video that's available in multiple languages, you can choose to play the video in its original language or your language (when available). You can't change the audio language once the video has been downloaded.

From the Google Play Movies & TV Settings menu
  1. Open the Google Play Movies & TV app Google Play Movies.
  2. Touch the Menu icon Movies Menu icon > Settings > Audio language.
  3. Select from the available languages.

Change your caption (subtitle) settings

When captions are available, you can turn them on or off during playback. If a video has captions available in many languages, you'll also be able to choose a language. From the Google Play Movies & TV Settings menu, you can select default language settings that will be used for all videos you rent or purchase.

Some videos may have captions that can't be removed.

While your video plays (streaming or downloaded)

To select a different language for subtitles:

  1. Near the bottom of your video player, touch the Audio Language and Captions icon Closed Captioning.
  2. On the "Captions" menu, select a language from the list.
  3. Touch OK.
From the Google Play Movies & TV Settings menu
  1. Open the Google Play Movies & TV app Google Play Movies.
  2. Touch the Menu icon Movies Menu icon > Settings > System caption settings.
  3. Follow the on-screen instructions to turn subtitles on and off, select a language, or update the text size.
