Read books on your computer

You can use your computer, Android, or iOS device to read books you bought on Google Play and use features like bookmarks, notes, and word definitions to enhance your reading experience.

Open an eBook

  1. Open the Google Play Books app Play Books.
  2. At the bottom, tap Library Library.
  3. To open an eBook, tap the cover.

Change font, text size and display

  1. Open the Google Play Books app Play Books.
  2. Open the eBook.
  3. Tap the centre of the page.
  4. At the top right, tap Display options Display options.
    • To change font, text size and line spacing, make changes under Display options Display options.
    • To change brightness or background colour, tap Lighting options Lighting options. To set your screen to adjust based on time of day, tap Settings Settings
  5. To return to reading, tap outside the display options box.

Change screen rotation, page turns and accessibility options

  1. Open the Google Play Books app Play Books.
  2. Tap Menu Menu and then Settings.
  3. Make your changes.

Jump to pages, chapters and bookmarks

To move quickly between pages, chapters and bookmarks, open the eBook that you’re reading, then follow the steps.

Skim through pages
  1. Tap the centre of the page.
  2. Swipe to quickly flip through pages. You can also slide the bar at the bottom of the screen.
  3. To go back to the page that you started on, at the top of the bar, tap the page thumbnail.
Jump to a chapter, bookmark or note
  1. At the bottom, tap Contents Contents.
  2. Select Chapters, Bookmarks or Notes. 

Read on a different device

When you open your eBook on a different device from the one on which you started, it will automatically open to where you left off. Make sure that:

  • Your device is connected to the Internet when you stop and start reading your eBook.
  • You’re signed in to the same account for Google Play Books on both devices.

If your eBook doesn’t open to the right page, try swiping forwards or backwards and check your Wi-Fi connection.

Note: If you transferred the eBook to your device using Adobe Digital Editions, page positions won’t sync.

You’ll only be able to do these steps if you’re on Android 10 or later. Learn how to check and update your Android version

  1. On your Android phone or tablet, open Settings Settings.
  2. Scroll down and tap on Display.
  3. Turn on Dark theme.
  4. Open the Play Books app Play Books.
