Buy & read ebooks

You can use Google Play Books to download and read ebooks on more than one device. You can also upload files and print books.

Buy & download ebooks

You can search and buy available ebooks from 

  1. On your iPhone or iPad, open a mobile browser, like Safari and then open
  2. Sign in to the same Google Account as the one you have on your Google Play Books app.
  3. Search for an ebook or browse recommendations.
    • To learn more about an ebook, tap the cover image.
    • To download the ebook, tap the price and then Buy EBook.
    • To read a sample, tap Sample.

Important: You can't buy or rent ebooks using the Google Play Books app on your iPhone and iPad. Instead, tap Add to wishlist Add to wishlist. Then, complete your purchase in a web browser. Learn more about your wishlist.

Viewing options

Tip: Not all ebooks offer more than one viewing option.

Depending on the book, you can view an ebook as:
  • Original Pages: Read the book in a fixed-page layout that usually matches the printed edition.
  • Flowing text: Change display options like font, text size, and line spacing.

Open & read the ebook on your Google Play app

  1. On your iPhone or iPad, Download the Play Books app Play Books at no charge.
  2. Open the Google Play Books app Play Books.
  3. Sign in to the Google Account that you bought your ebook with.
  4. At the bottom right, tap Library.
  5. Select your ebook.
    • To change the font, text size, or other formatting, at the top, tap Display options Display options.
    • To jump to a chapter, bookmark, or note, at the bottom, tap Contents Table of contents and then select a chapter or section.

Find samples of ebooks at no charge

  1. On your iPhone or iPad, make sure you’re connected to the internet.
  2. Open the Google Play Books app Play Books.
  3. Choose an action:
    • To find books recommended, tap Home.
    • Tap a book.
    • To start reading, tap Sample.
Once you download a book, you can read it offline.

Upload files & print books

Uploading files is only available on desktop and Android devices.

Tip: You can only print ebooks using your computer.

Rent books

  1. On your device, open Google Play Books Play Books.
  2. Browse textbooks for rent or search for a specific book.
  3. Select the book you want to rent.
    • To find out if you can rent the book: Check whether it says "Rent" next to the price.
    • To find out how long the rental lasts: Select “Rent” then check the information in the pop-up.
  4. To rent the book, select the price then complete the check out process.
    • Your rental period starts when you make your purchase, even if you haven’t opened the book.
  5. To find how much time you have before the rental expires, go to Library then check the book’s cover.
Tip: Books with rental periods that ended say "Expired." If you aren’t finished with the book, you can buy it or rent it again. Your old highlights and notes are still available during new rental periods.
