Buy and read eBooks

You can use Google Play Books to download and read eBooks on more than one device. You can also upload files and print books.

Download and install Google Play Books

  1. Make sure that your Android phone or tablet is connected to the Internet.
  2. Download the Google Play Books app Play Books.

Buy eBooks

  1. On your Android phone or tablet, open the Google Play Books app Play Books.
  2. Search for the eBook that you’d like to read.
  3. Select an eBook and then tap the price.
  4. [Optional] Depending on the book, you may also be able to read a sample. Tap Sample.

Viewing options

Tip: Not all eBooks offer more than one viewing option.

Depending on the book, you can view an eBook as:
  • Original pages: Read the book in a fixed-page layout that usually matches the printed edition.
  • Flowing text: Change display options like font, text size and line spacing.

Read eBooks

You can change the font, text size and jump to chapters when you read eBooks.

  1. On your Android phone or tablet, open the Google Play Books app Play Books.
  2. Select a book.
  3. Tap the centre of the page.
    • Swipe to quickly flip through pages.
    • To jump to a chapter, bookmark or note, tap Contents Contents.
    • To change font, text size and line spacing, tap Display options Display options.
    • To change brightness or background colour, tap Display options Display options and thenTone.
    • To rotate your screen, or adjust based on time of day, tap Settings Settings.
  4. To go back to your eBook, tap the centre of the page again, or tap Back.

Print books

You can only print eBooks using your computer.

Important: Some eBooks have limits on how many pages you can print. These limits are set by the book’s publisher and vary depending on the specific book. These limits are known as Digital Rights Management (DRM).

Rent books

  1. On your device, open Google Play Books Play Books.
  2. Browse textbooks for rent or search for a specific book.
  3. Select the book that you want to rent.
    • To find out if you can rent the book: Check whether it says 'Rent' next to the price.
    • To find out for how long the rental lasts: Select 'Rent' then check the information in the pop-up.
  4. To rent the book, select the price then complete the check-out process.
    • Your rental period starts when you make your purchase, even if you haven’t opened the book.
  5. To find out how much time you have before the rental expires, go to Library then check the book’s cover.
Tip: Books with rental periods that have ended will be shown as 'Expired'. If you haven't finished with the book, you can buy or rent it again. Your old highlights and notes are still available during new rental periods.
