Read books on more than one device

For most books on Google Play Books, you can start reading on one device and pick up where you left off on a different one. You must be signed into the same Google account on both of your devices.

Pick up where you left off on a different device

When you open your book on a different device from the one you started on, it’ll automatically open to where you left off. Just make sure:

  • Your device is connected to the internet when you stop or start reading your book
  • You are signed in to the same account for Google Play Books on both devices

Problems with reading on more than one device

Device limit reached

Most books have a limit on how many devices you can download them on at the same time. If you see a message that you’ve reached your device limit, you can remove the book from one of your devices. After you remove it, you can download it on another.

To remove a downloaded book from a device:

  1. Open Google Play Books Play Books
  2. Find the book you want to remove.
  3. Tap the offline icon and then Remove

To stop this happening often, turn off Books syncing on devices you don’t use often. To turn off syncing for Books on Android devices:

  1. Open your device Settings Settings
  2. Tap Accounts and then Google
  3. Switch Google Play Books to off.

Experiencing a slight delay

If you’re reading the same book on more than one device at the same time, you may experience a small delay in page loading.

Doesn’t open to the right page

If your book doesn’t open to the right page, try swiping forward or backward (mobile device) to reload the pages or refreshing the page (computer). If that doesn’t work, it may be because:

  • There was no connection to Wi-Fi or a mobile network when you closed the book or you aren’t connected now.
  • The book was transferred to your device using Adobe Digital Editions, which doesn’t sync page positions.
