Expert Intelligence is a cross Google initiative that helps you engage with your trusted sources through Google’s AI products. Now, you can add select ebooks you’ve purchased from Google Play Books into Gemini Notebook. Soon, you’ll be able to add even more sources to your notebooks, including in the Gemini app and AI Mode in Search.
Gemini Notebook is an AI-powered research assistant designed to help you refine and organize your ideas. With Gemini Notebook, you can:
- Easily upload PDFs, websites, YouTube videos, audio files, Google Docs, or Google Slides or discover new sources.
- Experience Gemini's advanced reasoning and interaction capabilities across different ways of communication like text, graphs, images, audio, and in many languages.
- Chat with your notebook to get grounded information based on your sources with clear in-line citations for accuracy, transparency, and trust.
- Transform your sources into approachable formats such as study guides, briefings, audio overviews, mind maps, and more.
Eligible Books for Expert Intelligence
Select English language ebooks in Play Books can be added to Gemini Notebook.
Books that may be eligible will have a “Tools” badge near the page count on the book’s detail page. Click the “Tools” badge to see if Gemini Notebook is listed.
- Browse a list of recommended eligible books by category here.
- For a book you already own, open the About the Book page by long-pressing the cover in our mobile apps or using the overflow menu in the web library. Books showing a "Use with Gemini Notebook" button near the Read button are eligible.
Note: Some books aren’t eligible for Expert Intelligence, either because the publisher hasn’t enabled the feature or because of the book’s language or formatting. The number of enabled books changes over time.
How to add a Play Books ebook to a notebook
From Gemini Notebook
- Open Gemini Notebook
- Check that you are signed in to the same account as your Play Books account
- Select “Create new notebook”
- On the left, select + Add sources
- Select the Play Books icon
- Your eligible books will appear (ineligible titles will be visible but greyed out)
- Select Add Source(s)
- You can now continue with your notebook
From the Google Play Store:
If you would like to browse Google Play Books to purchase an eligible book:
- Explore the selection of featured Expert Intelligence titles
- Select and purchase a title, which will be added to your library.
- Click “Use with Gemini Notebook” next to the Read button
- In Gemini Notebook, you can add to an existing notebook or create a new notebook
If you would like to use a book previously purchased or rented:
- Find the book in your library
- Long-press or use the overflow menu to select "About this book", then select “Use with Gemini Notebook”
- Continue in Gemini Notebook
- Add your book as to your new or previously created notebook
Missing Books
If you purchased an eligible book from Google Play Books but do not see it in the Play Books "Add Source" list in Gemini Notebook, please try the following:
- Check that you are logged in to Gemini Notebook using the same account that you purchased the book in.
- If you purchased the book in an account that you do not use for Gemini Notebook, contact us to see if it's possible to transfer the book
- Note: books you uploaded yourself to your Play Books library are not available for use as a Play Books source.
- If you accidentally purchased a book in the wrong account, reach out to our support team where they can verify ownership/entitlements and transfer your book.
