FAQ for upcoming change to Game Categories
What’s changing in December 2013?
Starting December 9th 2013, developers with apps that use the Application Type “Games” can choose an additional category for their app from the New Category field in their app’s Store Listing. This will not change the category of your game on Google Play until March 2014.
Why do I have to set a new category on my game’s Store Listing?
In March 2014, Google Play game categories will be expanded to cover a greater variety of games when listed in the Google Play Store. The New Category you select today will become your game’s category in the Google Play Store when the new categories are live.

What happens if I don’t update my app before the change?
If you don’t update your app or its Store Listing prior to this change in March 2014, and your app uses the Arcade & Action, Brain & Puzzle, or Cards & Casino category, a new category will be automatically assigned based on the table below. You don’t need to upload a new version or APK to make this change; you can simply update your app’s Store Listing by defining a new category.
|Current Category||New Category (March 2014)|
|Arcade & Action||Arcade|
|Brain & Puzzle||Puzzle|
|Cards & Casino||Card|
Do I need to make changes to my Google Play game services configuration?
Yes. When the new game categories go live around March 2014, you should set your Game Services configuration to the new category you selected. No changes are needed to your APK.
What about applications other than games?
This change is only applicable to apps that have the Application Type set to Games.
