Policy announcement: March 5, 2025

Starting today, March 5, 2025, we’re updating our Health Connect policy to strengthen safeguards regarding the handling of sensitive health record data. Health records may include medical history, diagnoses, treatments, medications, lab results, and other clinical data, obtained from healthcare providers or institutions, or through supported third-party health platforms. This data is highly sensitive and requires careful handling to protect user privacy. These updates include:

  • Clear eligibility criteria: Only apps with justified use cases for accessing health records will be considered. Guidance on eligible use cases can be found in the help article.
  • Detailed justification requirements: When requesting access to health record data, you'll need to clearly articulate why your app needs access to specific health record data types and how this access will directly benefit the user. You will be able to provide these justifications in a new section in Play Console.
  • Enhanced privacy obligations: Stricter limitations on data sharing, usage, and user consent requirements for developers handling health records.

These updates ensure Health Connect remains a trusted platform for users and developers while promoting responsible and secure handling of health records.
