Battery protection on your Pixel Tablet

If you have a Charging Speaker Dock, a message appears on your screen when your tablet is docked and the battery reaches a 90% charge. This message means that your battery has paused charging to help extend its lifespan.

Note: Some features are not available in all countries or languages.

Why does my Pixel Tablet's battery stop charging at 90% when docked?

Your tablet has a built-in battery protection feature that prevents your battery from charging to 100% when the tablet is attached to the Charging Speaker Dock. This feature helps prolong your tablet's battery lifespan. If you want to charge your tablet to 100% when it's docked, you can temporarily override this protection in your device's Settings app Settings app or charge the tablet with a USB-C cable.

What's the shield on the battery icon?

When your tablet is docked, a shield appears over the battery icon when the battery gets close to full. This means charging has been paused to help extend the battery's lifespan.

Temporarily override battery protection

You can temporarily override battery protection when your tablet is docked. For example, you might want to charge your tablet to 100% before leaving for a trip.

To temporarily override battery protection:

  1. Attach your Pixel Tablet to the Charging Speaker Dock.
  2. Open your device's Settings app Settings app.
  3. Tap Battery and then Charge to full.
Battery protection turns on again automatically when you undock your tablet and dock it again. You can override battery protection as often as you need.

Other battery protection features

"Optimizing for battery health"

To help extend your battery's lifespan, your Pixel Tablet automatically limits charging to about 70-80% under certain conditions, such as when the tablet:

  • Charges continuously for more than a few hours under high temperature
  • Charges continuously for more than several days

When this feature activates, you'll get a "Protecting your battery" notification. The message "Charging optimized to protect your battery" is also displayed in the "Battery" section of your device's Settings app Settings app.

This feature turns off automatically when the tablet no longer meets the above conditions. You know the feature is no longer active when the tablet starts to charge to 100%.

Stop using "Optimizing for battery health"

  1. Tap Charge to full on the "Protecting your battery" notification or restart your tablet.
  2. When the feature is turned off, the notification goes away and the tablet can charge to 100%.
    • Tip: The next time your tablet meets the above conditions, the feature automatically turns back on.
