Audio cuts out firmware 552 0 Recommended Answers 8 Replies 5 Upvotes

I just got the pixel buds 2 delivered from the official Google store and I have been using it for the last few hours and have noticed that audio cuts out quite frequently while listening to youtube music from my new pixel 4a.

I noticed that this issue has been ongoing for quite awhile and multiple attempts were made to fix with firmware updates. I'm just worried that the problem may not be the software but the pixel buds itself.

Please assure the community that hardware is not the problem, because I know I can trust google to fix a software problem, but I will have to return it if there is a flaw in the hardware that is making it difficult to resolve the issue with the firmware updates.

Thanks!

The problem may depend on the length of music I was listening to. I don't have problems with 3 minute long music, but when I was listening to a 3 hour beethoven collection, the cut outs were very consistent despite having all contents downloaded.

Hi Joon,

It can unfortunately be quite difficult (if not impossible) to fully diagnose a hardware issue over the internet so I'm afraid I can't offer any assurance on whether your issue is hardware or software related. There are some things we can look into to help rule out certain types of problems though.

First, can you see if factory resetting your Buds helps at all?

How frequently would you say the cutouts occur? Every few seconds, every few minutes, once an hour, etc? Does the audio cut out in both Buds simultaneously? Do the Buds recover and resume playback on their own or do you have to tap to toggle play/pause?

The Buds do seem to be particularly susceptible to some types of external interference. Can you tell me a bit about the environment around you when the cutouts happened? Were you sitting still or moving around? Was your phone in a pocket (which one?), in your hand, or sitting on a nearby surface? Were you indoors or outdoors? Did moving to a different location help?

I apologize for the deluge of questions but these details will really help me to better understand what might be going on.

Thanks,
John

I haven't experienced cutouts today so far, but yesterday, the cutouts started when I was indoors at a local coffee shop and it did not resolve when I was walking around the park next to the shop. The cutouts occured every few seconds or so and there was one instance where the left bud cutout individually for just a second. The cutouts did resolve when I had walked about mile away from the shop and the complex it was located in. I should mention that youtube music keeps playing while the cutouts are happening, but when  I pause and resume again with the tap feature on the bud, it resolved the cutout for a brief moment, for maybe 10-20 seconds.

I am currently at the complex using the buds again, but so far I haven't experienced the cutouts listening to the 3hr beethoven collection outdoors and having it in my pocket has not affected my connection. For both days, battery power has always been above 50% and I had not been carrying any other electronic devices with me. I have not had any problems using the buds at home.

I'll update again maybe after a week of use.

Thanks!

I should also clarify that cutouts that I was experiencing wasn't brief moments of silences. There were continuous audio cutouts in brief moments like it was having a hard time maintaining a stable connection with my phone which kept playing the music without pauses.

I too have been having audio cutouts with my pixel buds. I sent them in for a replacement.  I got the replacement buds in the mail yesterday and am still having the same connection issues. This morning I wore them while waiting on the train not far from where I live, nothing but cutouts. They were fine while riding the train into work and the started cutting out a little when I was walking to walk. I work downtown and have to cross busy intersections. That's when the buds cut out the most. I had to take them out of my ears because I couldn't take it anymore. I`m willing to hold onto them if I knew for sure that there were more updates coming to address these connection issues.

I have been having this same issue as of day one using my Pixel buds. They have gotten more stable with firmware updates but walking around outside with them results in the right bud hitching dropping or all out disconnecting. I have messed with setting and repaired a number of times.

I have been fairly understanding of this issue as i know sometimes software is to blame. But this has been three months with a premium product that basically only 50% works. My next step is to return them and get something else.

So the buds have been working well until this morning, where my left bud just completely disconnected. This happened after I took out my right bud out and left it with my phone to get something and came back (still had my left bud in my ears). Despite trying to reconnect multiple times, it wasn't working. I tried disconnecting and reconnecting again, taking both buds out putting in the case for a moment and putting them back on, but only my right bud would connect. However, just before I was about to post the problem on the forum, I tried to connect it again just now to make sure, and for some reason it started to work again.

I really like the buds for it's design and google assistant and will keep them, but I do wish that updates keep coming so that the experience improves.

Thanks!

Trust me it's the hardware. The connectivity issues with these buds are legendary. They've been happening since their creation and no matter how many updates they do it is still not fixed. I will admit it is somewhat better than it was at the very beginning but it's still pretty awful. I am sick of the Google Pixel fanboys and the apologist trying to give you all these work around and coming up with all these excuses. You pay $200 for a pair of premium earbuds and the one thing you want it to do above all is stay connected. These buds are not connecting consistently when they're supposed to and then lately my buds have been connecting even when they're in their case. Just randomly connecting without me even opening up the case. That's ridiculous. That's incompetent. I have a pair of $50 earbuds that don't give me nowhere near these problems. I'm sick of Google's excuses. I'm sick of their apologist. I shouldn't have to nurse and triage a pair of $200 earbuds. That is absolutely unacceptable!
