Pixel buds pro multipoint connectivity with a macbook

When pixel buds pro are connected to a macbook (even if there is no audio from macbook, even if macbook's lid is closed) other connected devices (tested with pixel phone and Chromebook) can't play any audio content.

To get out of that state, I can either disconnect from macbook manually or run "Eartip seal check" from the earbuds settings app (though, the latter doesn't work every time).

This doesn't happen if earbuds are connected to a pixel phone and a chromebook at the same time.

It seems like earbuds don't know how to switch audio if one of the connected devices is a macbook.

Versions I am using:
* Pixel 5A - Android 13, Build number: TP1A.220624.014 (though, this problem was happening on Android 12 as well)
* Pixel buds pro firmware - 122+release_2.14_signed
* Macbook Pro (14-inch, 2021) running macOS Monterey version 12.5.1

I contacted Google support and did all basic troubleshooting (forgetting device, factory reset earbuds, ...) and nothing helps.

Hi Anon,

Are you using the Spotify app on your Macbook, by any chance? We had another thread where a user described a very similar issue, and they found that closing Spotify (rather than just pausing/stopping it) would allow the multipoint connection to switch between devices like it's supposed to:

I'd love to know if you're observing the same behavior.

Cheers,
John

Yes, this seems to be the problem! Spotify app was open (though not playing anything) and that caused the issue. After closing the spotify app on the macbook, I was able to play sound from my phone. Thanks!

I will try to reach out to spotify regarding this.

I'm glad to hear that helped in your case as well.

I am also definitely interested to hear if you learn anything from Spotify. Please keep us updated!

Hi,

What is the reasoning behind closing this thread?
There is a bug. And it seems it is not only spotify on a macbook, I was able to reproduce with apple music as well. Though, I need to test this more.

Before I opened this thread, I contacted customer support. They weren't aware of this issue.

Initially I was requested to hard reset my earbuds, which seems standard.
Then I was asked to downgrade phone's OS from android 13 to android 12, because there are no troubleshoot steps for Android 13. But then other team told me that it is not possible to downgrade.
After that, I got suggested that I should replace my earbuds, because customer support thought it is a hardware issue.

It doesn't seem I am the only one experiencing this and customer service is not aware of this, so I don't think we should close this thread. I am not sure if possible, but I think this bug report should be forwarded to the dev team because there may be something can be done from the earbud side.

Hey folks,
We only close threads after they have been inactive for a certain amount of time. Thank you so much for letting us know about your issue. As of right now, we don't have any updates about this issue to share on our side. It's been a while since anyone has reported anything like this. Just wanted to check in one last time to see if anyone is still experiencing the issue.

Let us know when you can,
James
