Add a bank account in the Google Pay app

To help send money to friends and family, you can link a bank account in the Google Pay app. In the US, you can also use a bank account to:

  • Add money to your Google Pay balance.
  • Transfer money out from your Google Pay balance.

*You can’t use a bank account to send money to someone who:

  • Doesn’t have the new Google Pay app
  • Doesn’t allow people to search for them

You can still send them money with a debit card or your Google Pay balance.

Add a bank account

Important: Currently, Chase bank accounts can’t use Plaid linking in the Google Pay app to:

  • Send money to friends or family.
  • Add or transfer money out of your Google Pay balance.

Chase bank users can continue to link their bank accounts manually with a test deposit or with a debit card.

Add a bank account or prepaid card with Plaid

Google Pay works with Plaid, a third-party service, to obtain transaction and balance info. If you choose, you can use Plaid to allow Google Pay to track your spending and account balances. You can use Plaid to link your bank account to Google Pay and send money to friends or family. You can also add money to or transfer money out of your Google Pay balance. To provide this service and to help create a secure connection to your financial institution, Plaid collects and uses your financial institution login info and accesses your account. If you have more than one account with your financial institution, you can choose which accounts you want to add. Not all accounts are supported.

  1. Open the Google Pay app .
  2. Tap a contact and then Pay.
    • To add your bank account, you won't need to complete the payment.
  3. Enter a payment amount.
  4. Tap Continue Next and then Add Bank Account and then Accept and Sign in.
  5. Select your bank.
  6. Sign in to Plaid.
  7. Enter your bank login details.
  8. Follow the login instructions.
  9. Choose the accounts you want to add.

Tip: If you can’t find your bank with Plaid, add your bank account manually.

Add a bank account with Plaid when you transfer money

  1. Open the Google Pay app .
  2. At the top right, tap your Profile picture.
  3. Below your profile, tap Google Pay balance  and then Transfer out .
  4. Enter the amount that you want to transfer.
  5. Tap Next and then By [Date] and then Sign in to your bank.
  6. Enter your bank login details.
  7. Follow the on-screen instructions.
  8. Choose the accounts that you want to add.
Add a bank account manually with a test deposit

To add a bank account, you can manually add your bank details. You only need your account and routing numbers. All bank accounts are supported.

To complete the process, Google sends your bank account a test deposit of less than $1.00 USD that you need to verify. In 2–3 days, the test amount is deposited to your bank account.

  1. Open the Google Pay app .
  2. At the top right, tap your Profile picture.
  3. Tap Google Pay balance and then Transfer out .
    • To add your bank account, you won't need to complete the payment.
    • You can add a bank account manually when you pay someone, or add money to your Google Pay balance.
  4. Enter the amount you want to transfer.
  5. Tap Next.
  6. To add your preferred bank, tap By [date] (No fee).
  7. Tap Add bank account.
  8. Select Enter your account & routing number.
  9. Add your bank details.
    • Name on bank account
    • Account type
    • Routing number
    • Account number
  10. Tap Continue.
    • In 2–3 days, in your bank account, you’ll find a deposit of less than $1.00 USD labeled “GOOGLE.”
  11. Tap Got it.

After you get your test deposit

  1. Open the Google Pay app .
  2. At the top right, tap your profile.
  3. Tap Google Pay balance and then Transfer out .
    • To add your bank account, you won't need to complete the payment.
  4. Enter the amount you want to transfer.
  5. Tap Next.
  6. To add your preferred bank, tap By [Date] (No fee).
  7. Next to the account you want to verify, tap Verification needed.
  8. Enter the amount that Google deposited in your account.
  9. Tap Submit.

Tip: After you verify and link your account, learn how you can use your money in Google Pay and Google Pay balance.

Tip: If you want to add money or transfer money out of Google Pay to a bank account, you can add a bank account for that purpose as part of the transfer.

Remove a bank account

  1. Open the Google Pay app .
  2. Tap Insights  and then Show all accounts.
  3. Tap the payment method you want to remove.
  4. In the top right, tap More More.
  5. Tap Remove account.
  6. Follow the steps on the screen.
