Add cards & bank accounts in the Google Pay app

You can add a debit card, credit card, bank account, and other payment methods in the Google Pay app to help you make payments and get insights about your money.

*You can't use a bank account to send money to someone who doesn't have the new Google Pay app or doesn't allow people to search for them. You can still send them money with a debit card or your Google Pay balance.

Important:

  • If you set up a card or bank account to track spending and get financial insights, it doesn’t also set up the card or bank account to make payments. 
  • To set up a card or bank account to make payments and track your spending, use both sets of the following instructions.
  • Find cards or bank accounts you added to Google Pay.
 

Add a payment method

Add a debit or credit card
  1. Open the Google Pay app .
  2. At the top, tap the card button Credit card. Swipe right until you find the blank card icon.
  3. Tap Add a payment method and then Debit or credit card.
  4. Use the camera to capture your card info or enter it manually.
  5. Review and accept the terms from your card's issuer.
  6. If you’re asked to verify your payment method:
    1. Choose a verification option from the list.
    2. Enter the verification code.

Tip: After you add a card, you might find a small temporary authorization on your account from Google. This authorization checks that your card and account are valid. It won’t be charged to your balance and will go away soon. Most temporary authorizations are removed from your account within 48 hours.

Add a bank account with Plaid

Google Pay works with Plaid, a third-party service, to obtain transaction and balance information. If you choose, you can use Plaid to allow Google Pay to track your spending and account balances. To provide this service and to help create a secure connection to your financial institution, Plaid collects and uses your financial institution login information and accesses your account. If you have more than one account with your financial institution, you can choose which accounts you'd like to add. Not all accounts are supported.

Add bank account now

  1. Open the Google Pay app .
  2. Tap a contact and then Pay.
    • To add your bank account, you won't need to complete the payment.
  3. Enter a payment amount.
  4. Tap Continue Next.
  5. Tap Add Bank Account and then Accept and Sign in.
  6. Select your bank and sign in to Plaid.
  7. Enter your bank login details and follow the login instructions.
  8. Choose the accounts you want to add.

 

Add a bank account manually

To add a bank account, you can manually add your bank details. You only need your account and routing numbers. All bank accounts are supported.

To complete the process, Google sends your bank account a test deposit of less than $1.00 USD that you need to verify. The test amount is deposited to your bank account in 2–3 days.

  1. Open the Google Pay app .
  2. At the top right, tap your profile.
    • To add your bank account, you won't need to complete the payment.
  3. Tap Google Pay balance and then Transfer out .
  4. Enter the amount you want to transfer.
  5. Tap Next.
  6. To add your preferred bank, tap By [date] (No fee).
  7. Tap Add bank account.
  8. Select Enter your account & routing number.
  9. Add your bank details.
    • Name on bank account
    • Account type
    • Routing number
    • Account number
  10. Tap Continue.
    • In 2–3 days, in your bank account, you’ll find a deposit of less than $1.00 USD labeled GOOGLE.
  11. Tap Got it.

After you get your test deposit

 

  1. Open the Google Pay app .
  2. At the top right, tap your profile.
    • To add your bank account, you won't need to complete the payment.
  3. Tap Google Pay balance and then Transfer out .
  4. Enter the amount you want to transfer and tap Next.
  5. To add your preferred bank, tap By [Date] (No fee).
  6. Next to the account you want to verify, tap Verification needed.
  7. Enter the amount that Google deposited in your account and tap Submit.

 Tip: After you verify and link your account, you can use it to add money to your balance, send money, and transfer the balance out.

Tip: If you want to add money or transfer money out of Google Pay to a bank account, you can add a bank account for that purpose as part of the transfer.

Add a way to track spending & get financial insights

Add a credit card

With Google Pay, you can add a credit card to track your spending and account balance.

 

  1. Open the Google Pay app .
  2. Tap Insights .
    • If you already have a card or bank account: Tap Show all accountsand then Add account.
    • If you don’t have a card or bank account: Tap Add account.
  3. Tap To track spending & balances.
  4. To connect your card, tap Accept & sign in and thenContinue.
  5. Select your financial institution and sign in to Plaid.
  6. To track spending and balances, tap Yes please.
    • If you added a debit card, you can only track spending and balance of its associated checking account.
  7. Follow the on-screen instructions. To confirm it’s you, your bank might send you a verification code, request info like your address, or ask you to unlock the Google Pay app.
  8. Tap Done.
Add a bank account with Plaid

 

  1. Open the Google Pay app .
  2. Tap Insights .
    • If you already have a card or bank account: Tap Accounts and then Add card or account.
    • If you don’t have a card or bank account: Tap Add card or account.
  3. Tap To track spending & balances.
  4. Tap Add card or account.
  5. To connect your card, tap Accept & sign in and then Continue.
  6. Select your financial institution and sign in to your online bank account.
    • If you don’t find your financial institution, you can tap Search and enter the name of your bank. You must enter an exact match with your bank’s official name.
  7. To track spending and balances, tap Yes please.
    • If you add a debit card, you can only track the spending and balance of its associated bank account.
  8. Follow the on-screen instructions. To confirm it’s you, your bank might send you a verification code, request info like your address, or ask you to unlock the Google Pay app.

Fix problems

Can’t add debit or credit card

If you can’t add a debit or credit card, try these general tips:

  • Make sure that the name and address in your Payment Profile settings matches the info on file with your bank or card issuer.
  • Contact your bank or card issuer for more information and help resolving the issue.
  • Try a different payment method. If you’re trying to add a card, make sure it’s accepted.
  • Try again later in case of technical issues.
