Device Hand-Off Between AP devices (same network) 1 Recommended Answer 3 Replies 0 Upvotes

As an example: My phone (oneplus 7 pro) connects to my office AP on the 3rd story of my home. When I go into my living room, 2nd story and diagonal down, the phone stays connected to the office AP even though the primary AP is in the same room. This remains the case all day, unless I cycle the wifi on/off on the device.

I believe this is because the device doesn't see a stronger AP to connect to, due to both APs being on the same channel and putting out the same SSID. So it has trouble distinguishing between APs, and doesn't hand off from one to another. I believe this is why enterprise network APs are set at different channels (think dorm at a college or university)

When I do connect to the right AP, the connection speed is considerably faster connected to the closest AP. So that rules out interference or weak signal at the AP as the cause.

The issue, is that the phone will hang on to that previously connected AP until it fully looses the connection to it. Meaning in order for this system to work, you have to have a dead zone between APs for a successful hand off.

Is there another way to solve this issue? I am debating setting up different SSIDs on each AP to force each AP onto a different channel (putting the office one in bridge mode should let me do this).

Michael,

Thank you for replying.

My office, which is in a University Building, has 3 APs near by. All three APs broadcast on different channels. My phone has no issues handing off between APs.

I have 3 APs in my house, 2 Nest Wifi Devices and 1 OnHub. The two nest devices are APs connected via ethernet and are set up as a pair. The OnHub is in the lowest level of the home in bridging mode. The 2 Nests are on the same channel, the OnHub is broadcasting on a different channel. My phone has no issues connecting to the OnHub or vise versa going between the levels of the home. All three are broadcasting the same SSID.

I get that newer technology can provide better connections, but seemingly this is an issue with these network devices and the way they are set up.
