Hey folks, 

Earlier this year, we announced that starting in the Spring, we will now require all Nest account users who have not enrolled in two-factor authentication or migrated to a Google account to take an extra step by verifying their identity via email when logging in to their Nest account. 

The time has come, and beginning in May, Nest will be adding this new account security feature. When a new login is initiated —for example, from a new device— you’ll receive an email from account@nest.com with a six digit verification code to be entered in order to successfully sign in. This code is to verify it is you trying to access your account and without this code, you will not be able to log in. 

Your privacy and security are important to us, and adding this feature will reduce the likelihood of an unauthorized person accessing your Nest account, even if they have your Nest username and password.

Here are some additional security steps you can try:
  • Enable 2 factor authentication in the Nest app using your phone number
  • Ensure you have a strong and unique password 
  • Consider migrating to a Google Account if it’s right for you

If you can no longer access your account, you can check out some troubleshooting steps from this help center article

Before making this security change, we will let you know when this feature has launched. However, until then, ensure you can still access the email associated with your Nest account.

I have a thermostat. I don't need the added hassle of 2-party verification in order to turn on the air conditioning. Please rethink this policy for non-security applications. I can always lose the Nest and purchase a less inconvenient way to control the temperature in my home.

Agreed, what is someone going to do?  Turn our air up or down?   Not to mention the account is in your spouses email but we both use the app, so when I log in, it will send an email to my spouse that I can't get to.  This is completely user UNFRIENDLY!  If we decide we DON'T want additional verification we should be able to make that choice.

2FA is only needed once when you log in on a new device. It's not like you need to do it every day. It's a good thing.

Other manufacturers are likely all going to follow this policy, if they haven't already. 2FA or GTFO.

While I understand the need for security, having to get an email each time I want to check or change the temperature is very inconvenient. There has to be a better way, or how about this? Give the customer the option to turn off the two factor verification. I would vote "no" on this, if customers had a vote.

Please don’t!!  I tried your two factor crap and undid it shortly.  Please, I just want to be able to adjust the dang thermostats!!  My Nests have worked flawlessly, for years, through Amazon Alexa.  You break—I throw away the thermostats.  There are other options.  I have IP cameras, not yours.  I have whole house lighting automation, not yours.  I have whole house audio with 8 discrete amplifier/zones, not yours.  Please—you can be replaced so fast—and I like my thermostats.  I have had home automation/control  products since their infancy.  Don’t. Screw. This. Up.

If this is only for the first time you log on from a device and then never after that, google must have really bad writers because it doesn’t say that at all anywhere. If it’s not, and we need DFA every time to access our account, no thank you. I certainly would never put google locks on my doors:what if I wanted to leave it unlocked because I was having friends over. Having security options is nice
Telling me how I must lock my account is not nice, not smart and not American. Fortunately, while I don’t have a say about security on my thermostats, I have a say on which ones I’ll use. I’m redoing a new house now. It won’t have any google products.

All of you complaining about having ot enter a code you receive in email every time you check your nest account clearly arent reading the post very well. It is only when logging in on a new device. How often are you doing that?

Question about support for multiple adults with different email addresses in the same house.

Tried DFA when it was first offered as an option months ago.  Ended up turning it back off because it was tied to one primary email account.  Even though you can define Full Access family members in the nest app, the DFA query always went to me, the primary account holder.

So in the scenario when I am away and my wife wants to change the temperature in the house, she cannot do so.  Fail.  Sure, it may be for “new devices only” but we all know how that works in real life.  Devices get reset from time to time due to app upgrades, password changes, etc.  And of course, its only when it is freezing outside that you realize you need to re-DFA.

Is there a way to use the multiple email accounts that Nest already knows about to do DFA back to the proper user name?

And why isn’t this using the Google Authenticator app?  SMS?  Why just email as an option??

Any way to avoid this two factor verification?  We also have multiple family members using our Next app.
Hope I'm not understanding all of this.  And yet another frustration with something that was so simple....
