Nest Wifi Throttling Download Speed? 0 Recommended Answers 0 Relevant Answers 65 Replies 52 Upvotes

Hi,

I switched my whole apartment to Nest Wifi after thinking that my Apple Airports were too outdated due to old Airport equipment.

After switching to Nest, I realized that my network felt much slower.  So I went on the hunt for a solution.

I have a 300Mbit fiber internet.
- I have one Nest Router (ethernet), plugged straight behind the modem - the speed out of there seem to be halfed
- I have 5 other Nest router (plugged into ethernet around the house) - ALL slow
- So I started hunting.  Realized my switch was too old - so I changed it to a Gigabit switch
- No improvement
- Then I thought perhaps CAT5 was slow.  Read that CAT5 could only go up to 100mbit (probably bad info) as someone later showed me their CAT5 can go up to 800mbit
- Then I went straight to the wall jack and see I do get about the same speed that comes out of the first router (so really no problem with my switch or cables)
- Then I ran a speedtest via an ethernet cable to one of the Nest routers in the other rooms.  THE DOWNLOAD WAS ABOUT 1/3 TO 1/4 of what I was expecting - but the upload was exactly what I was expecting - FAST.
- Then I repeated the same thing in 3 other locations - same result.  Slow down, fast up.

I'm pulling my hair out because I don't see any reason why Nest would throttle the downstream.

Could I be missing something via setup?

Please help.

Thanks,

Harry

I have a similar issue only with upload speeds.  I upgraded from Google Wifi pucks to Nest Wifi Router.  I'm about to just return it, it's not worth the hassle for me.  Hopefully Google will acknowledge it at least.

Same issue here. I had 3 Google Wifi, no problem at all. I thought to buy a Nest Wifi Router to set up as the main router. Since I did that the Download speed is much worse.

Google we need an answer...

Hi Nhest,

1. Yes, If I connect directly to te modem I get 600/600mbps. My ISP is Movistar Spain
2. Askey RTF3505VW (HGU)
3. Modem->Nest Wifi Router->Gigabit Switch->3 Google Wifi
4. I tried to set up pppoe in Nest Wifi to avoid Double NAT. It was the same problem, moreover upload speeds were worse
Now I changed the Nest Wifi Router for Google Wifi. Im getting almost 600/600 mbps. The nest wifi i’m using it as a satellite

I think that hardware config of Nest Wifi is not capable to route all traffic and switch all packets through the ethernet port.

Matias - Yes! Same exact thing except ISP and modem for me.  It has to be something wrong with this router.  For the old Google Wifi to work and Nest Wifi to have throttled speeds... I hope this has been escalated to an engineer.

I just setup Nest Router + WiFi point yesterday and experiencing the same with normal download speeds but slow upload speeds.  Setup is with Verizon FiOS and I've confirmed speeds from the ONT direct to a laptop are as expected (75/75mbps). My map is Verizon ONT > Nest Router > FiOS Quantum Gateway (with WiFi off...needed only for FiOS TV).

I'm consistently getting upload speeds that are at best half of what they should be (~35mbps) whether connected wirelessly or wired in direct to the Nest router. Initial explanation I got from Google tech was "Yes you suppose to have a full speed on your internet service provider devices like the ONT and the Fios router. But not on Nest Wifi router. they will send 80% of their speed to Nest Wifi router. Because the remaining speed is dedicated for your Fios router and ONt to work."   Not only does this explanation not make any sense, I'm pretty sure it was also made up on the fly by the tech rep I was chatting with which is concerning as bad info from google tech support will only further confuse things...

I've previously setup the original Google WiFi and it worked great without issue for 2+ years. Given others seem to be having similar issues and Google has yet to even acknowledge (from what I've seen) that there is something going on here I'm likely going to return the Nest WiFi and get the original Google WiFi or another brands mesh system... not worth the hassle to fight it.

I ended up returning my Nest Router there's clearly something else going on.  I also got half upload speeds using a direct connection into the Verizon FIOS ONT.   It's not worth the hassle.  At least an acknowledgement something is up would have made me hang on a little longer.  I have temporarily switched back to my old Google Wifi pucks with normal speeds.

I had 120 mbps internet that is hooked to nest wifi router + 2 points. I normally get around 100 mbps on wifi. Lately I upgraded my internet to 400 mbps, same setup with nest router + 2 points, surprisingly, the maximum wifi I can get is only about 120 mbps, sometimes as low as 20mbps. If I test the speed between nest router and the modem, it's always 400+mbps, but I could never reach the same on wifi no matter how close my iphone x is to the router or points. Can someone tell me what is reducing the wifi speed?

By theway, the ISP uses a modem+router device but it is set to bridge mode inorder to connect to the nest router.
