Google Wifi on CenturyLink Fiber 0 Recommended Answers 6 Replies 61 Upvotes

I am having Centurylink fiber service installed at my house, and I am trying to identify a modem that will work best with my Google Wifi and the need for pppoe and vlan tagging. I dont want to use their modem/router So I am looking for something that will get the job done and allow me to keep having the coverage I have loved since I started using Gwifi.

Are their any suggestions? Are their any updates from previous issues I have read in the community? Most of the posts are a year old or older.

Hey Paul! There are posts out there naming this as possible. You can pick up a 5 port TP Link managed switch for your vlan tagging and Google Wifi is able to do your PPPoE portion. The issue as I'm researching this and finding is that the PPPoE service on Google's side is much slower than networks are capable of so customers are switching back to Centurylink routers to run an ethernet cable off of that to Google Wifi. This is currently my setup, and I'm hoping to do the same and get away from my Centurylink router altogether. Here's a reddit post about what I was finding today that's about 5 months old:

Thought i'd let folks know that here in central Florida, there was no PPPoE.  I called to ask for the PPPoE creds and they said I didn't need it.  I didn't believe it, but after plugging in my router, I found it was true.  Lesson is, call your CenturyLink local provider first before buying equipment/planning for the need to do PPPoE or tagging.

I also came across this FAQ buried in Google Wifi Help. https://support.google.com/wifi/answer/7215624?hl=en&ref_topic=6243113

Any update on this OP? Did you pull the plug on getting GWifi with your Century Link and got it to work properly? I am curious as I want to ditch my Cenury Link router for a GWIFi for faster speeds

My parents are in a CenturyLink DSL area and therefore still need the modem, but I disabled the router functionality and authenticate the connection with PPPoE on Google Wifi. Works great and prevents a double NAT situation.

Michael, what speeds are your parents running?

I am running the TP Link/GWifi setup and its working but I am still about half the speeds of what I was getting on the ISP router.
