Google Nest Mini's are disconnecting from network every couple of minutes
1
I have a google Nest Wifi (recent addition) and 4x Nest Mini's (2nd gen) (recent additions) and 2x Google Mini's (1st gen).  My nest mini's disconnect from the wifi at random internals.  I have tried resetting all devices with no luck.  I have looked at all google help topics with no luck.

I believe it is a software issue (possibly when combined with the Nest Wifi) because my old Google Mini's have no issues currently and had no issues with my old router, but so far nothing has resolved the issues.

Also, whenever i try to use the speakers throughout the house as a speaker group, random speakers with start and stop playing throughout songs or stop playing music altogether and require a restart to work again.

Same problem here, I have 2 nest minis and 1 nest hub. The nest mini keeps disconnecting, whenever I try to play a music on a group speaker one of the nest minis randomly stops.

I've tried everything that I could but no luck yet, thinking about return one of nest minis...

I am having this issue with my new Nest Mini 2 that I got through the Christmas promo. My other two Home Mini speakers, and Chromecast, are unaffected. But for about a week, the NM2 has been disconnecting itself several times a day. Restarting it, factory reset and router reset all haven't helped. :(

Same issue wirh nest mini from christmas prono, I was using the home mini just before without any problem, but now with nest mini it keeps unlinking itself 2 times per day between me and one other family member. I tried everything,  resetup, reset, flush everything on every member home app, nothing worked.

Please release a fix for this asap, a real shame, its unusable. (strange gift!)

I have this issue with one of two nest minis I had purchased. It will work shortly before disconnecting and I end up being berated with the assistant telling me to connect to a network, despite no other nest device or first gen home having an issue. With factory resets doing nothing.

I’m having the exact same issue. I have a network with 2 google nest home hub, 2 google home minis, and 2 google nest minis. When I didn’t have the 2 google nest minis everything worked but now I’m having trouble casting any of these devices all the time.. I’m also unsure if you’re supposed to be able to set a speaker with a nest mini + home mini but also cannot do that

I thought it was my cheap spectrum router but i tried connecting my old netgear router with 802.11N and the nest mini (2nd gen) can’t even detect to the wireless network.

It seems like this is very similar to another known issue, please see https://support.google.com/googlenest/thread/1408816?msgid=10902255

I have also encountered similar issues since the Nest Mini was introduced to replace one and now a second device. I have also noticed that the Nest Hub freezes and screen is unresponsive to touch, sometimes voice works.
As many have mentioned the same Nest drop out issues, i sent the logs each time it occurred via feedback as the unit will not connect to the wifi via the app. The unit must be unplugged first.

Hey Everyone,

Thanks for all your feedback. It must be a frustrating experience when you just bought a device and it's not connecting properly to your network. Let's make sure that your device is within 15-20 ft. away from the router to get enough signal from your network. You can also try to connect your devices from a mobile hotspot using 2 different phone/tablet - this will help us isolate network and device issue.

Let me know how it goes.

Cheers!

@Muddi:

How is your answer helpful here? You've already heard several people tell you that it's not a connection issue.

The devices are being UNLINKED. They're not disconnecting from the network, that's an entirely different behaviour.

Unlinking is an account action.

It's really bad when google doesn't know how it's own product works. :p

For the record, I have 4 devices. 2 google home minis 2 nest minis. Three of the devices work normally and are all further away from the router than the 4th one (which is a NEST mini and keeps unlinking.)

Hey Raphael,

I appreciate your feedback. Most of the users posted on this thread are pertaining to their Google Home devices that are disconnecting from their network just like what the thread creator describes on his post.

To clear things here, if you're getting an error "I can't connect to the internet/network right now" or if your device is not visible on the app after the setup, or it keeps on disappearing from the app, there's a possibility that it has something to do with your network or set up the device. That's why we recommend some workaround like connecting to another network like hotspot connection.

If your device keeps saying "Please log in to the Google Home app,"  this is an issue with your Google Home device unlinking from your account. If this is the issue that you are experiencing now, it is better to follow this thread: https://support.google.com/googlenest/thread/24227735 for updates.

Hope this helps.

Cheers!

Adding my +1 to this as well.

Have had for a while a Nest Hub Max, Chromecast gen 3, Chromecast built in speaker (Pioneer VSX-1131) and a Lenovo Smart Clock. No issues with those. Today added 2x Nest Mini to the network. Either or both randomly drop off the Wi-fi, saying 'I can't connect to the wifi right now'. Seems they can break other devices as well - I lost the ability to connect to the Smart Clock from the Google Home app until I rebooted the Clock. Never happened before adding the Nest Minis.

My Gen 2 mini will just stop working.  Won't respond to "Hey Google" and touching it does nothing.  Removing the power cord and plugging back in doesn't help.  It just lights up the two middle dots, then all 4 light up.  Doesn't respond to voice or touch.  Sometimes, the mini will just start working.  However, it will eventually stop working again, giving me the same issues I previously list.  My Gen 1 minis work perfectly.

I am noticing the same issue with the Nest Mini.  I also have a Home Mini as well for testing, sitting next to the Nest Mini, and it does not have this issue.

Before posting I tried the suggestions and my observations are as follow:

Only the Nest Mini would randomly disconnect from the network, anywhere from minutes to hours.  I have tried the setup using two different WiFi networks and a cellular hotspot network.  All test cases had the WiFi AP within 10ft of the Nests.  The Nest Mini would be disconnected and show back up after a minute or two.

So i still have the issues mentioned above and have only implemented 2 units. However it seems that the first unit installed, has started having less dropouts. Each time any device has issues with setup i use the feedback button and send the log data.I have used Multiple devices Samsung S10, Apple iPAD pRO11 with the same result.  I have executed the same steps, resetting the device, unplug and plug power, executing the wifi setup multiple times, which i leave it if it fails and it usually comes back online.  The one thing that was different between the two units was that i was using my Domotz device to basically  ping port 8008. I just configured it for the second unit.... It may not fix anything, just providing some detail different.

All problems I experienced, such as disconnects with 2nd gen Nest minis, went away when I _disabled_ band steering on the router and connected all Google Home devices to the 2.4GHz SSID.

When band steering is _enabled_, Wi-Fi 2.4GHz and 5GHz SSID names and security parameters are identical. Devices will connect automatically to the best signal. I suspect the Google Home devices were jumping around so to speak...

My phone connects to the 5GHz SSID and this works great with e.g Stadia and controlling the Google Home devices from it.

The best mini disconnects all the time no matter which network I have it on. I run 1 Gb at my home so I have ample bandwidth to handle the load. I don't have this issue with any other device I own, it seems to be isolated to just the nest mini.

Same problem... C'mon Google how many of us will it take to make this more of a priority? Seems like a problem that could easily be fixed in an update. That's partially my fault for leaving the volume at 80%.

Also when connected to phone via Bluetooth the google nest will drop that connection too after playing a few songs. Tried a factory reset which makes no difference. Does anyone with the issue have Their router wifi 2.4ghz and 5ghz with the same SSID? If able it would be worth trying to separate them in your router settings. Try renaming the 5ghz  by adding something like 5ghz to the end.
See if that works if not reconnect your mini on the new 5ghz connection.

Have 2 Google Nest Minis that keep dropping off the very same wifi. They are the closest devices to the router so not a signal issue. Have tried all the resets etc. No difference.

They drop off regardless of whether being used or not and happens so often they are broadly unusable. 100% specific to the Nest Minis.

I have a similar issue: 4x Nest Minis, 1x Chromecast, 1x Home Hub connected on a Linksys EA8300 router.

When two Nest minis are connected the other two refuse to connect to the WiFi. I can only setup all four of the Nest Minis if I turn off two of them. When all four are on, two of them will randomly disconnect. The ones that disconnect are random. They simply refuse to connect to the WiFi. If you turn off the two that are connected, the two which refused to connect immediately go online.

I tried troubleshooting this with Google over twitter, we tried limiting them to 2.4G bands, 5G bands resetting etc. But they always behave the same way. When they see that there are more than two Nest Minis on the WiFi they refuse to connect. I checked the router settings and they also show disconnected so this must be an issue with the firmware.

Hey Everyone,

I apologize for the delayed response. I'd like to dig into this further by gathering some details:
  • What is the firmware version of your Google Nest Mini?
    • Open the Google Home app.
    • Tap your device Settings.
    • Scroll to the bottom and look for Cast firmware version: X.XXX.XXXXX.
  • What is the make and model of your router?
  • Who's your network provider?
  • Are you using a network extender or repeater?
Thanks to Fraklin, for sharing additional troubleshooting steps. I recommend his answer because this is also one of our workarounds for this type of issue and is applicable for those routers that have an option to disable band steering.

So far I've discovered that if I have more than two nest minis on the network at the same time the issue starts.

Here's what happens.
Setup nest mini via home app.
Nest mini will stay connected for around 2 to 5 hours until it disconnects from wifi.
If I set the nest mini up and ask it to play music it will stop after around 2 minutes of playback. I'll ask if the mini is connected and it'll reply with "there was a glitch" followed by "I can't connect to the WiFi network". Sometimes it won't say there was a glitch.

If I reboot the mini it will reconnect for around 2 minutes before dropping connection.

I'll post fw info in the morning. Cheers

Hi Muddi.

Thanks for your response. Answers:

Firmware: 1.44.191160
Router: BT Smart Hub 2.
Network Provider: BT
Extender/Repeater -:None..

Note - router on standard default settings except Smart Setup is switched off.

Problem: Have 2 Nest Minis connected. When paying music one of them (either one) will drop out after a few mins. So it stops playing and the Home app can't see it. Switching the Mini off and on or waiting around 5/10 mins results in the Mini reconnecting but then problem repeats.

I have a Goole Max, 3 Chromecast and 3 of the original Homes and they all work flawlessly. The Minis are the closest devices to the router (same room) so not a wi-fi range issue.

Thanks again

Hi Muddi

When it stops and I ask it to play something again it does one of a 3 things it either says I can't connect to the internet or it says "playing xxxxx" then after about 30 seconds it says "something went wrong please try again later" and finally sometimes it starts playing music again but then stops after a couple of minutes.

I have 4 First Gen Minis and they all work perfectly on the same network doing the same things. I also have a home hub that works perfectly and a couple of chromecast audios that work perfectly so you can imagine my frustration.

Just tried some different things with the 2 nest mini's:

Asked "Hey Google Whats The Weather" and they have both told me the weather for my area.
Next I asked "Hey Google Whats the news headlines" and they both said "here's the news" followed by silence!
And finally I asked "Hey Google how did Liverpool get on" They both replied "Liverpool won today four nil against Southampton"

Obviously I tried both separately. I followed this up by asking "Hey Google play the best of Sade" they both replied "Playing The Best of Sade on spotify" and then after a few seconds "sorry something went wrong please try again later"

Both are within good range of my router and both are showing as connected on the hub configuration page.

Problem:
- My router (ZTE 279T) does not have an option to disable or enable band steering.
- My router does have two different bands with two different network names.
- I was unable to use the nest mini without disconnects.

Proposal:
- After disabling one band, which presumably also disables band steering, the nest mini works fine.

Conclusion:
- Nest mini needs to handle band steering better.

Nest Mini keeps on disconnecting to network - Still having an issue
  • What is the firmware version of your Google Nest Mini? 1.44.191160
  • What is the make and model of your router? Netgear Orbi RBK50
  • Who's your network provider? Municipal Electric Co but I have straight to switch 1000 Mb speed
  • Are you using a network extender or repeater. No
  • Additional information: I have 8 other google home devices in the house and 4 google home devices at my office and I only have issues with the actual Nest Mini. No matter what network it is on and no matter what I do. The band steering is a nice work around, but when the devices is the only one out of 9 that gives you issues then it's probably not the network. Also when that device has the same issue on multiple networks it would lead to the nest mini being the issue, either via firmware or just bad hardware.

  • Who's your network provider? Shaw (Canada) 300mpbs/15mbps
  • Are you using a network extender or repeater. No
  • Additional information: I turned off all advanced features of the RBR20, one by one, but that did not seem to address the issue at all. Of course, on the RBR20 like many mesh systems it is not possible to disable band-steering. I have 3 Nest Minis and the disconnect feels like it occurs the majority of the time on one of these devices, although that is anecdotal. I also have 2 Nest Displays which do not appear to disconnect, or if they do, I am not observing this occuring.

I switched my smart home setup from 4 Google Home Minis and a Google Home (5 total devices) to the configuration mentioned above (2 Nest Displays, 3 Nest MInis) and this is when this issue began occuring. I did not experience a single Home Mini disconnect on the exact home network configuration I connected the new Nest devices to. This leads me to believe the problem lies not within my network configuration, but the Minis themselves. I'm hopeful this is a software issue as I am certain replacing this hardware with another unit will not fix the issue, the chance is slim I got 3 bad units for 2 different suppliers. :(

Hopefully a pattern will be spotted and lead to a solution. :)

Just got two nest minis yesterday to replace 2 home minis. And have nothing but problems. I reset everything and started by scratch. The nest minis are constantly disconnecting on a cycle. I can watch it in the google home app. It stays connected for 13.5 seconds then disconnects for 2 seconds. Then connected for 13.5 seconds then disconnects for 2 seconds. Does this over and over. I set up a timer and it cycles constantly at those intervals.

Ive tired a magnitude of things from different router settings. 2.4g and 5 g. Making sure air fairness is off. Making sure band steering is off. Making sure settings for Universal Plug and Play (UPnP), multicast, Internet Group Management Protocol (IGMP) are right. Factory resetting everything multiple times. Rebooting modem and router multiple times. Set static ips. cleared out the entire google home app. Nothing. Same result over and over. Phone support even had me try different wifi passwords as my existing password had special characters in it. Said it might be a issue. But nope still happens. After wasting about 4 hours I just removed the entire home app and removed the new nest minis I got last night and re installed my OG home minis and everything is back to normal right away. No fiddling. Works solid. No drops.

Interesting note i see most people here have a much higher firmware then me. I did multiple resets and reboots over the 4 hours and it stays the same and wont pull the higher firmware others are reporting. But seeing this thread makes me realize even with later firmware something is obviously broken.

Im pretty shocked at this issue. Its more then a bug. Its product breaking. It renders my two device setup useless. LOL. How can this not be fixed already? before i saw this thread i was prepared to just chill and wait for a update. Patience right. Figured something like this gets fixed in a week or maybe 2 at the most. But now see this issue dates back to DEC and still isnt fixed. LOL.

Im sure its gunna get fixed sooner or later. But seen as I was just upgrading 2 perfectly working home minis for really no other reason then I like having new tech and possible future features to come to the nest mini. If I cant have it work properly right away then they gotta go back i guess. Im not about to sit on a product like its a pre order beta test.

Same to me, just got a Nest mini yesterday, everything worked fine until I told it to play some music from spotify.
It did play, but only for about 10 seconds, after that the device is disconnected from my network, then it reconnects, play other songs, after 10 seconds, same thing happens.
Sadly I can't return the mini since I'm in Vietnam, and Google does not officially sell the device here.
Hope there will be an update soon.
UPDATED: Just find a way to fix this annoying situation. Disable DDoS protection (or increase the values) within the router settings and you're done ! Work like a charm !

DDos protection is already off on my router so that’s not the issue on my end. But even if it was you shouldn’t have to disable a security feature just to get these Nest minis to work. Honestly if the Nest Mini is DDosing my network I don’t want it in my setup anyways no mater what. Lol.  Nice it worked for you tho.  Wonder if it will last. Some thing tells me it won’t. A few times I thought I figured it out only for the issue to return. Interesting tho. If it really did correct it for you that means the Nest Mini is constantly hammering your router. This can’t be right. I don’t know tho. Come back in a few days and let’s us know if you still are issue free.

Interesting thing is my two home minis work perfectly fine in my fully functioning home network as does all of my many many other devices connected to it.  It’s just the Nest minis that gweeb out so logic tells me it’s most likely the Nest minis.

I just ended up returning the Nest minis until they have ironed out the issues and they are as stable as the OG home minis.

I bought 2 nest mini's, and have 2 previous home mini's already.

The new Nest Mini's suck... "Nest Mini keeps on disconnecting to network"

While the google home mini's run fine, never disconnecting and always working, I can watch the nest ones disconnect a few times a day.  Worst part, I put one, directly underneath my AP, now it won't connect to wifi at all.

There is no way it is my Access Point, I have a small business grade network setup in my house, I have tested the db levels, and it is broadcasting plenty strong, I believe it is the nest mini's problem with sending data back to the AP specifically on the 5ghz channel.

Super annoying... I can barely use them.  1/2 the time I get things like "I can't recognize your voice" or "I can't connect to <blank>, because it can't connect to internet.

I'm having a similar issue only all 3 of my speakers (Nest Hub and 2 Mini's) will stop playing music. Tried unplugging each - nothing seems to work.

Has anyone who was running into this issue tried anything with success?

Hey Josh. Try and unlink and remove both of the Nest minis from your google home. Then unplug them and just leave your nest hub connected. Then try and use it and play music. I bet it works. My guess is soon as you add the Nest minis back after it will all break again. Give it a shot.

I'm seeing this as well Muddi. I'm not sure if others have added people to their "Home" in the app but I have and other members are seeing a notification that my account has removed the Mini and I see notifications saying other members have removed the Mini. It's only happening on my 2nd generation Mini.

Yes I was having some stability after buying nest wifi with one of my nest minis, however today it started to disconnect.
I have had no issues with other devices on the network, just nest minis that disconnect.
During streaming music today I was able to get that to work again. But it seems that there is still a flaw with the nest mini.
Today's disconnect tally
Blue nest mini = 14
Charcoal nest mini >99
Coral google mini = 0

I should note that while turning off my 5ghz band made the device usable, it still has an abnormally high number of disconnects. My original google home never disconnected in at least a year of use, unless the network was legitimately down.

My nest mini still gets about one disconnect a day, which is annoying but not a deal breaker.

Same problem with 2 new Nest Mini's... set-up, connect, works, disconnects... repeat. I got them to work this morning for about an hour - even paired them in stereo, then 1 of them disconnected and will not reconnect or even be recognized for set up.

Tech support (Bugs) indicated that I was the only one having the issue. After I emailed this thread to him.... "Oh yeah, it seems to be an ongoing problem and it has been escalated...". A second guy just called me and tried telling me that I'm the only one having this issue. I don't think he liked my response.

WTF Google!!!

On a side note; if you say, "Hey Google, you suck." (or other, less nice things), she will say I'm sorry and ask me what the problem is. I replied. I wonder if Google is getting those messages?

Google, when is the fix coming?  This is an embarrassment...

Same here in the UK, one of my nest mini's keeps dropping off my wifi network. Which is a nest wifi router. After rebooting the mini, it connects for a few minutes then off wifi again. I can't tell which signal, 2.4 or 5,  the nest mini is using. During group play I've known it drop and reconnect during one song and then off again.

Same problem here.
Two Nest Minis (2nd generation) and one older Home Mini.

If either (or both) Nest Minis are downstairs (closer to the router) they continually disconnect and aren't available in the Google Home App.

Somehow when placed upstairs they don't have this issue.
I changed the channel on the router to an unused channel (with no other networks) to ensure it wasn't caused by interference. All three devices use the 5GHz bandwidth wherever they are and the signal is strong throughout the house. There dioesn't seem to be any band steering as none of three have connected to the 2.4GHz band.

I have tried resetting the affected Nest Minis multiple times and resetting the router.

This also happens to the 2 nest minis I received in the Christmas promotion. Also when they do lose connection, if I check the google home app it says “Set up 2 devices”.
My nest hub max, 1 year old google home, nest hub router and wifi point retain their connection but the 2 nest minis are constantly refusing to play music and saying “give me a moment to connect to wifi” when I speak to them.
Come on Google - these devices are great when they work, but to have to keep unplugging the power cord to reset them is a bit ridiculous. It looks from this thread that hundreds are affected so how about just fixing  the problem?

Same here. Maybe half of the times that I say "hey Google" to it, I get the respond "there was a glitch, try again in a few seconds" or "please wait while I'm connecting to the internet". Very frustrating.

My Google Home Mini never had any problems.

Tried resetting twice, tried setting fixed IP and the device is 10ft from the router. No other device (Google or not has such problems).

The response from Google is infuriating. I have the SAME EXACT PROBLEM. Whenever I am casting it randomly goes silent while the old generation ones keep going like nothing. I have 2 1st gen and 3 2nd gen.... the nest minis all have that problem... but google says it does not affect all minis... I have been trying to return them to get 1st gen and it has taken me 2 months already. Google is sitting on this one giving us no response.
It seems to be a recurring issue with the nest products. I have the thermostat, a camera and a doorbell and they ALL have issues. The worst part is that google products use 5G on the google home app but the nest products need 2.4 so if you have multiple products then something is always going to be malfunctioning because they don't like the same bandwidth.

  • Bought two 2nd gens and they would never stay connected. Sold them.
  • Received four 2nd gen Nest Minis from YouTube Premium/Family Plan promotion. Sold three, but connected one and it actually has stayed connected for months without issue. I still have one of them in the package and have been too afraid to open it and have it NOT work.
  • Just bought another 2nd gen Nest mini for a good deal, brand new in package and... it us NOT staying connected.
  • The difference between the 2nd gen Nest Mini that stays connected and the one that doesn't = the one that is staying connected has a manufactured date of: MFG: 10/2019.
  • The Nest Mini that will NOT stay connected has a date of: MFG: 09/2019.
  • That's the only difference I can see.

I suspect my issues may be faulty wifi receivers within my Nest Minis (at least 3x of them)
