Home/Away Assist stopped working completely 2 Recommended Answers 240 Replies 230 Upvotes

My Nest thermostats stop going into eco mode by themselves since a week ago. I've set them to sense presence and use phone locations. It worked until about a week ago. Now Nest just doesn't record event of any kind and never put them in eco mode when no one is home.

I've toggled all the setting I can find and none of them worked.

Thanks for posting the user guide and totally ignoring the question. It wasn't "how does this home away work" it was, I'll repeat as I'm having the exact same problem.

*Why did your recent software update break this feature? The thermostat is no longer recording *any* events!*

I for one am slowly changing all my smart home to the Chinese Tuya system, as it actually gets better with time. My experience with Google and Amazon is each update makes the product look better and perform WORSE! Without the home away assist this thing is useless. Fix it!

Hi User 4807934959117297485,

Apologies for the misunderstanding. Software updates being released by Nest fixes bugs and improves our devices' performance.

Please be advised that software updates did not remove the Home/Away Assist Activity History feature on your thermostat and on the app.

Note: Activity history can be viewed by the Owner of a Nest home or anyone that has Full Access. Anyone with Home Entry Only access will not be able to view the Activity History.

Let's get this sorted out by trying these steps:
  1. Press your thermostat ring to open the Quick View menu.
  2.  Select Settings Nest settings icon.
  3. Go to Reset.
  4. Hit All Settings > Confirm
Important: You should remove your thermostat from your account before using this option to reset to defaults.

After resetting to defaults, you’ll need to set it up again just like you did when you first installed it.

You'll also need to add your thermostat to the Nest app again.

Note: If you have any Nest Temperature Sensors, resetting your thermostat does not remove them from your account.

Resetting your Nest thermostat to defaults will reset any learning and remove all your personal settings. This will give the thermostat a fresh start just like when you purchased it the first time. Observe the issue for a day or two and check if it's still not recording the Home/Away Assist Activity History.

Keep us posted.

Best,
Roxelle

Same situation here. Thermostat and protects do not activate home/away. App keeps asking me to use my iPhone to set home/away. This wasn’t an issue before.

I have had Nest Thermostat for about a week, following a new boiler install. I will just point out that I was forced into this system as a result of the installer breaking my previous Tado geo-fencing system which has on the whole worked flawlessly for the last 4 years. Although there are some initial pro's over the previous system such as not requiring a bridge or internet to main a schedule, I am on the whole I am experiencing disappointment.
  1. Home/Away Assist - Either doesn't work or unreliable tried various settings Stat only/Phone only & both etc. I honestly think using the Thermostat to detect whether you're home of away is pointless as you don't spend your time living in the Hallway or other rooms. Nest need to sort out a reliable geofencing system for mobile telephones this is where Tado scored highly as you could manually override if you wanted the heating to come on till it detected you approaching or were at home, this was especially great if I was getting on a flight home form USA back to UK when I didn't have a Wifi or Cellular signal.
  2. Scheduling - Again you are better off setting a regular schedule rather than the auto learning feature. OK you can manually adjust temperatures or switch to Eco but Tado had a great facility where you could set a timer to say boost or decrease the temperature for a specified time period and it would then revert to schedule.
  3. Home/Away/Eco/Off Modes- All totally confusing especially when combining with geofencing (When it works!!) Needs to be better consistency between settings on Stat & App appreciate Nest have other products. As I mentioned above the lack of override your system & schedule if you want to pre-warm the house when its in ECO via Home/Away assist is worrying. I guess the only way round this is to increase your eco temp when about to come home as leaving your system in home mode will operate your schedule.
  4. I am also missing real time reporting and statistics.
Ok most of you are probably saying go back to Tado, I will bear with Nest for now but it needs a total redesign in respect of Firmware/Software. I used to have a fire and forget system that could be manually overridden,  all I have now is a nothing more than a normal programmable stat at a greater expense that isn't saving money as its over complicated and stupid.
