Hello Google Nest Community,

As part of our commitment to privacy, we explained that you would always see a clear visual indicator when your Nest cameras are on and sending video and audio to Google. Starting today, we’re rolling out the following changes that no longer allow you to turn off the visual indicators on Nest Cam, Dropcam and Nest Hello:

  • In Settings for all Nest Cameras and Nest Hello, now you can dim the light status.  When the camera is on, the status light will glow green, the light’s low enough to still be used in any room, even for Nest Cam IQs used in a nursery.
  • For Dropcam, when the camera is on, the status light will glow blue.
  • On Nest Cam, Dropcam, and Nest Hello, the status light will blink when the camera is live video is streamed from the Nest app.

We’re also changing how your cameras react when a Nest Secure alarm or Nest Protect detects smoke or carbon monoxide. Starting today, you will need to select each of your cameras to start recording during a smoke, carbon monoxide, or security event, even if this feature was previously enabled.

These changes reflect our commitment to respecting the privacy of you and the people in your home.

Let us know if you have any questions,

Chelsea and the Google Nest Community

edit: adding link to petition further down in the comments:

wait .... its April fools right?

So first you make it easier for criminals to locate my "security" cameras, then you tell them if it's safe to proceed and lastly if they burn the place down, you wont record it?

Full refund please.

I use my Cameras to monitor outdoors. Now the thieves will know where they are. I also use a few indoors cameras facing outside. Now these will be useless at night. Nest/Google if this is what you are going to do then issue those of us who spent thousands because they did not have a light a FULL refund. I have 10 cameras 6 indoor 2 IQ and 2 Outdoor. Plus Aware subscriptions. Really Google!

Hell no!  This voids the agreement I made when buying the cameras!  I’ll take a full refund so I can go buy something else that works like I want it to!  I don’t want criminals to know my camera are on or where they are?  Good grief leave NEST alone GOOGLE!  You are ruining what was a great thing... you destroyed my thermostat.. now leave my cameras alone!

Recently, we shared our commitment to privacy to outline how our products work in your home. As part of that commitment, we explained that you will always see a clear visual indicator when your Nest cameras are on and sending video and audio to Nest.

So we’re changing how the status lights function on Nest cameras, Dropcam, and Nest Hello. You will be able to dim the light on your camera, but it will always be on when the camera is on. We’re doing this to make sure you, and those around your camera, are aware when the camera is on and recording.

Starting today, we’re rolling out the following changes:

• In Settings for all Nest cameras and Nest Hello, the ability to turn off the status light will be removed. Instead, you’ll be able to dim the status light. When the camera is on, the status light will glow green.

• For Dropcam, the setting to turn off the status light will be removed. When the camera is on, the status light will glow blue.

• On Nest Cam, Dropcam, and Nest Hello, the status light will blink when the camera’s live video is streamed from the Nest app. The setting to turn this off will be removed.

We’re making these changes for greater transparency and privacy in your home. You can learn more about the status light updates here

Why are you removing desired functionality? I don’t want people to notice my cameras. That’s why the light is off. If people want the light on, the option was already there. Those of us who want the light off had to choose to go in and turn it off in the settings. That is not the default behavior. You are making the product worse.

I use both of my indoor nest cams as baby monitors. Now every time one of the kids makes noise, the status light will blink at them just to make sure they fully wake up. This makes Nestcams terrible baby monitors. I want my money back. How is this an improvement? Who thought this was a good idea?

Ditto all said about the new policy using requiring the devices to glow "I'm here crooks!" NOT for me.   I will get rid of my Nest camera and doorbell as soon as I can. Thanks Google for ruining a good product.

Dear google I do not accept this being rolled out to my devices and I am starting a class action lawsuit for this all users please join with me and tell google no we will not accept a feature being rolled out with only 1 day notice after 5 PM on a Wednesday for something that is not wanted or needed. It is your legal right to recored anyone in the public space and not having my indicator light turned on is my freedom. This is like google coming into your hose and removing your Lockes and saying this is how it should work now. I am very happy to see all the other users on this forum feel the same way. #Boycott google

I'm pretty livid about this "update"...  Like the other commenters, I think it is pretty ridiculous to have a bright green light notifying everyone where my cameras are and whether they are actually on or not.  Then on top of it, you remove my ability (as the OWNER of the camera) to control that light.  When purchased I had full control, and without my approval, now you've taken it away and materially changed the product as far as I am concerned.  As such, if you're not going to offer full refunds to those of us that do not approve of this change, then you need to bring back the option to control the status light as before.

For clarity - I completely understand the likely motivator for this move, and that Google is trying to assure users that Google/Nest aren't listening in or watching us, and the status light will be a sort of guarantee of privacy if it's not lit, but that's not enough.  Bring back full control please.  After the price we have paid for these products I should not have to resort to covering the damned light with a piece of duct tape.

I just purchased my Nest cam last week. I appreciated the ability to turn off the status light as Ring doesn’t have that option. Seeing that my ability to control how it functions is no longer available, I will not be purchasing another. The majority of professional security cameras do not have status indicator lights, so why must Nest? If a security camera is present one should always assume that it is on and recording! I think this is a very bad decision on Google’s behalf!

Google, while you may think you can ignore the vocal majority here, it's good to know that my product reviews elsewhere are making others reconsider purchasing your products. We can protest in many other places other than here.
