Issues with Google Home / Assistant and Android TV (Nvidia Shield) 0 Recommended Answers 290 Replies 371 Upvotes

Hey guys. So I've seen multiple posts on Reddit, the Nvidia Forums, and Google's Forums about issues with launching YouTube, Netflix shows, etc. on the Nvidia Shield Android TV from Assistant on other devices. I've been playing around with solutions given in the comments of these posts, and I personally don't have one "end all" solution on this (as I have experienced these same issues myself and have not found a complete solution), but everything points towards this being a a Google issue rather than an Nvidia issue.

Right now, my Shield can be in one of two "states": I can either successfully launch Netflix shows and open Spotify ("Hey Google, open Spotify on my TV") using Assistant on my Home Minis; OR I can launch YouTube, but not the other two. These three apps (YouTube, Spotify, and Netflix) are the ones I have been testing with specifically. What I do to change to either "state" is following sets of instructions on Reddit threads, the Nvidia forums, and threads on here (I have listed both methods below).

The first state (Can launch YouTube, not Netflix/Spotify) is obtained after uninstalling updates to the Cast app on my Shield, removing and re-adding it to my Home in the Google Home app, rebooting, and then installing updates to the Cast app. This allows me to open YouTube on my Shield from my Mini's Assistant, and ALSO makes the icon of my Nvidia Shield have the four Assistant "dots" in my Google Home app, just like my Home Minis.

The other state (Can launch Spotify/Netflix, not YouTube) can then be obtained by clearing the data on the Google app on the Shield. I am on the latest version (3.7.xxx) at the time of writing, but tested this on 3.6.xxx and 3.7.xxx and it works on both. After doing this, I can click the Assistant icon on the Shield's home screen and go through the process of re-enabling the built in Assistant. After this, the change in state is completed. This ALSO switches the Shield's icon within the Google Home app to have a red "play" button, rather than the four Assistant dots.

I'm honestly not sure myself of what this means, beyond that Google has some pretty large bugs or inconsistencies in their implementation of Cast Built In and the Assistant itself on the Shield. As I said, I cannot achieve full intended functionality of launching apps from voice. This doesn't even cover things such as my inability to launch YouTube on the TV at all from my Assistant on my Android phone (It instead ignores the TV flag and launches the local YouTube app), or other inconsistencies during the experience.

What makes this more confusing is that every single one of these issues, when brought up, always has at least one comment saying that the entire functionality works without issue for them (Some people report the process of obtaining one or the other state I have mentioned resolves issues fully for them; some say that they have no issues launching things on their Shield from their phone, etc.). So I'm not sure where to even start on diagnosing the issue, or finding a common factor / cause for the affected devices.

TLDR: Google has some big issues with their implementation of external Assistant functionality on the Shield (and possibly other Android TV devices) and the issues and experience may vary by person.

**Update:** When the Shield is in the first state (Can play YouTube, has assistant icon in Home app), asking my Mini to "Open [Insert any app besides YouTube] on my TV" yields: "It looks like Cole's Nvidia Shield isn't available right now." I also am confused because I have not yet installed the Chromecast Built In app update yet after resetting to factory settings. Before installing the updated app, the app size is at 729kb. After installing the update, the app size balloons to 115mb, yet there is no change in functionality.

When trying to do the same "Open [app] on my TV" in the second state (Can play Netflix), it yields: "Sorry, I don't understand." and doesn't mention my Shield at all.

It definitely is not the only thing that "doesn't understand" what is happening right now.

I spent a few hours last night working with a very helpful support tech on this forum.  It started off as a different issue entirely, but I asked him about the same thing you are having issues with.  Without hesitation he described my exact issue : "hey google play the office on shield"  "sure playing the office on shield, I'm sorry I can't do this on android tv yet".

He made it sound like they are well aware of the issue and are working on it, so I have to believe it is an issue on Google's side, at least for the most part.  Hopefully they will find a correction soon.

I recently replaced THREE Chromecasts with Nvidia Shields.  We loved voice casting to the Chromecasts and assumed we could continue doing this with the Shields.  It doesn't work.  My wife hates me for making these very expensive changes and losing functionality.

I have a Home Mini and Nvidia Shield in two different locations and neither one works with Netflix casting (Sorry, I can't play Netflix on Android TV yet.  Try using your Android TV remote instead.)

Seriously. What gives? Nvidia actually claims the Shield works with Google Home on their website, but there is almost zero integration! Please help...

This is a very frustrating issue.  YouTube used to always work fine with voice casting.  The complaint used to be Netflix was not compatible with voice casting yet. Then there was the update that allowed both YouTube and Netflix to voice cast with Google home.  Then suddenly the Google home repeated the command as if it was about to carry it out and then said sorry we've encountered a problem. Now the only thing I can cast is audio to my shield TV through Google play music. How in the world has Nvidia or Google allowed the loss of functionality.  I really feel sorry for the guy who replaced his Chromecasts for Nvidia Shields.  I just keep hoping for a new update to fix these stupid issues.

I'm having issues as well, YouTube TV, Google Music, and YouTube wont do anything on my TV when I give the command to Google Home.  It used to work fine, and I thought the Nvidia Shield updates would only help this but made it worse.

Same here, hub loses connection to shield, then connects next day, then loses it. Right now, can't cast YouTube to it.. just says 'Can't connect... make sure Shield is available'.... but can turn it off if I ask it to... go figure
